It's All Greek to Me

... the last bags that popped out onto the carousel and we knew we had to take a specific bus to a stop where our hotel was. So we figured out how to get a ticket, where the bus was, and hopped on. We knew which stop we wanted but the bus doesn't exactly announce its stops. So we had to search out the window at each stop to see where we were. Problem: all the bus stop signs were in Greek and didn't help since we only ...

Off to Egypt!!

I can not believe that my time in Europe is over, but I leave this afternoon for Egypt!! Greece has been a really nice last stop. My Grammy and Grampy, who usually eat 2 BIG tomatoes between them at dinner would be so proud of all the tomato and cucumber salads I have come to love here in Athens! And my sister would be disgusted! :-) I am really looking forward to ...

Holy Jesus Crack

You think you know what a gyro is. You think you know what it tastes like. You don't know what a gyro is until you've had not just the lamb version, but also the pork and the chicken. You don't know what a gyro is until you've had a handful of french fries rolled into the pita along with the tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, and onions. Real Greek gyros are so delicious, so sacred, so addictive, that the students have dubbed their new favorite food (forgive me, their choice of ...

This Train, Beach Glyfada?

... it's a gigantic ash tray. I've never seen so many cigarette butts in my life. The young women had stretched out in their bikinis and Toronto had bought a big beach blanket (he crowed, "Who's your beach blanket daddy now?"), when I looked at my watch and realized I only had 20 minutes of sunning to do before I have to leave to be home in time for my scheduled Skype call with Bear, who was getting up an hour early before work to call me. Understandably, Mary Lou and Wedding Belle ...

Greece!

... and again in Amsterdam. We landed in Athens around 4pm Greece time ( on Tuesday) and had quite the adventure once we got there. I brought two suitcases over with me-one medium sized and one semi-small suitcase. Grandma suggested mailing the medium sized one to London in advance because it would be quite a hassle to lug it around for the next 3 weeks. We looked into it while we were ...

The end of the mino-tour

... below. This cretin has left the labyrinth. On the ground, out of the plane and onto the Metro. It's packed by the time we reach Syntegma Square, but a cheaper and quicker bet at rush hour. From the square, it's only a few blocks back to the Elektra Palace where I get the same room, 702, that I left May 3rd, enjoy a cool shower and a couple of miraculously refreshing gin and tonics in the lobby bar.

The End!!

1 Nov - Our last full day in Greece. The plan today is to visit Delphi, then make our way back towards Athens to stay somewhere pleasant that will also be an easy drive to the airport tomorrow morning (preferably somewhere so we can avoid Athens traffic - and potential traffic jams!! tomorrow as well). The drive to Dephi is very pleasant (apart from a minor detour when we lost the road signs) and very scenic. For the most part we follow the northern coast of the Gulf of Corinth - there ...

The journey continues...Patras to Piraeus

... information with us and things to be mindful of in Santorini. The bus dropped us off at the Piraeus Port and we got a taxi to our Hotel Lilia http://www.liliahotel.gr/en_reception.h tm with tickets in hand for the next and last ferry ride for the morning. The Hotel Lilia was a nice little hotel about 5 minutes from the Port and conveniently located just a block or so from the yacht marina - we tend to attract these big yachts! After check in we ...

Athens

Afternoon, Hope this finds everyone well. At the moment it is ******* down outside so we are huddled up in a Internet cafe while trying to keep warm, which is strange considering we both got burnt yesterday. Though considering when we left London it was snowing so it's an improvement in the least. We left London early Saturday morning and had a glorious flight over with a meal and a movie (casino royale) even though we had to night bus to Heathrow it ...

The beginning and end of it all

... of our trip it again dawned on us how lucky we had been. Barring a major catastrophe on the way to the airport the next morning or some sort of mid-air mishap we felt confident that we would make it back to the US intact. Sure, we had had our little brush with disaster in Rio that left us a little worse for wear and perhaps a bit more cautious on the balance of the trip, but all things considered we were astounded at how little had gone wrong. Other than the fact that we ...
