Amwaj Islands Manama, Bahrain
Out of the widow Bahrain looks like lots of dust with skyscrapers on. Inside it is a strange mix of Christmas decorations lots of tour groups who look like they might be going on pilgramage, 25k rolexes in duty free, mcdonalds, costa and free internet to keep us amused. We've got 2hrs to kill - body clocks already out of sink! Am going to try and learn some nepalese from a podcast.
Bahrain, Bahrain paulandvicki... the bus was keeping on at an average speed, so where exactly were we? Strained my neck to catch the nearest milestone, and when I caught sight of the nearest one, shocked was an understatement: it said Jeddah 775 Km. I had to frantically call Manoj ( my host at Jeddah) and say: dont expect me too soon.

As I sat back observing, I saw that we were about to bypass a small town. And as I took in the picture of a small Saudi desert town, I couldnt help wondering: Are there ...
Al Khobar, Ash Sharqiyah, Saudi Arabia ashok_s... to the west and Qatar to the east. We didn't know where it was until we were due to fly home via the island. It's interesting to note the road bridge (King Fahd Causeway) which links the two countries and is 17 miles long. Soon to be surpassed by the Bahrain to Qatar 'Friendship Bridge' currently under construction at 25 miles - it will be the longest bridge in the world.

Bahrain, Bahrain m_eidan... I had checked into a brothel. That night my belief was confirmed by noices coming from the room next door. I knew I would not be able to eat in restaurants here as I had grown accustomed in India and found a small convenience store. Here was my second encounter with Bahrainian hospitality, the man behind the counter looked at me, not even glancing at the goods I had selected and picked a number. I payed and sat on a nearby wall eating my lunch and assessing ...
Manama, Bahrain martin84So many new islands are being built here, the shape of tiny Bahrain on a map is changing every year. But yesterday, we were on the hunt for a good beach to take a dip in the sea. We headed out to the newly man-made Amwaj Islands which is close to the airport and right next door to another man-made island development Kane is working on. There was little ...
Manama, Bahrain satterthwaite... in the restricted area. We explained the situation and they pointed us in the right direction and off we went looking for the group. Right at meeting time we got to the coordinates given to find...nothing. Hmmmm...nope. Nada. Nothing. Grrrr.... So away we went back up-Island and this time found the Country Club. We toured around and found out that we could play tennis, squash, racquetball, and use the pool for only 4 BD ...
Manama, Bahrain shadocg... the rich, eat fast food and drink fast coffee, and essentially never leave home. They had hit the Big Time. The dream American businessman vacation, it seems. But something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong--being oddly comforted by being in a Starbucks in Bahrain, 11 hours ahead of New York, put me squarely in the pro-capitalistic sphere. And surely my family, my country, and the world in general have benefited from the sort of business--revolving around ...
Manama, Bahrain traveese... black robe and beige Hijab to enter. Our tour guide was a Frenchman who had converted to Islam, and had been living in Bahrain for 3 years. We were there between the noon and 3:00 prayers, so the place was quite empty. It is modern, having been built in the late 1980s and was rather stark and geometric. Our tour guide's shift was over, so he kindly dropped us off along the eastern corniche where we strolled along the water. We saw the dolphin park (but did not go in), the ice rink and ...
Manama, Bahrain smash... At least we didn't find black hairs in our bed as did some of our fellow travellers. After a free lunch we walked around the block; a very short block as the heat was oppressive and the sights non-existent. We lay down for a brief nap, which turned out to be a big sleep as we didn't wake up for six hours by which time we had missed our free dinner. At this stage my pedometer was still working and I found that we had walked 6.62 kilometres since leaving home.
