6 weeks down and umm ? left to go

So its been about 6 weeks and I am starting to almost feel like a permanent resident of Dar. So whats been happening this past week you ask - well work has been busy as Beth from London School is here and we are working hard, swahili school is almost over and to be honest I am glad about that as I feel my retention for the new language can not go beyond -- the following.."Where is the toilet, Hello, goodbye, chicken, rice, fish, water, I want, and I need to go (insert place)". My teacher Dina...

Climbing a hill

... Water Point, where the highest running water on the mountain can be found. From here The Saddle beckons until the paths rejoin at a point called Jiwe La Ukoyo, or 'pointed rock', at 4394 metres. After a rest here you have just two hours left to trek for the rest of the day. If you are looking for a less travelled route the right fork from Horombo Hut (eastern path) is steeper and rougher, but still walkable.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 ...

The last inn that wasnt full

Realised I have a bit more time left. This entry is quite pointless, and is just to tell you were we are... Dar es Salaam.

Will be getting up early tomorrow. Mum catches a plane to Lusaka where she flys home to become a reader of this blog rather than an author.
Me and Dan catch the 1pm 48hour ...

Dar es Salaam

... needed the money more then we did so donated it for a prize for the next game - what a guy haha. 6 December Today saw us drive to Dar Es Salaam and in particular to Mikadi Beach. It was a scenic drive through the lush parts of Tanzania which more resembled a tropical forest with its palm trees and banana plantations throughout. The drive was mostly uneventful except for a stretch of road that had been pulled apart ...

... did my diary. Then James wanted to see us so we went to his sister's graduation from school and met his family who were very nice. We had lunch at the Chief's Pride with James. It was a good day! 19/10 - I went to the Yacht Club with Soma and talked about Buguruni and how we can improve the school! Soma left at lunchtime but we stayed a bit longer to sunbathe as we needed to get a tan! (I need to be browner than my family when they arrive at Christmas ...

... businessmen through PowerPoint presentations with equal fervour. Now, I believe in the power of prayer to effect positive change in one's life in a general sense. There is an unfortunate side effect here, though: a fatalism, a sense of determinism that can work against the progress that comes from rational thought. People often find comfort in thinking that a personal tragedy, such as a death in the family, fits into a larger plan that God has for ...

The journey south

Tomorrow we head south to Malawi, but I just wanted to leave a short message about Internet. The Internet in Malawi seems to be either non-existent or very expensive (up to $10 an hour). So we probably won't be using it, and we most likely wouldn't be able to upload photos anyway. Zambia, which is next, doesn't seem to be much better. So just a ...

... my clothes no longer smell bad after I wash them, they sure are not soft. By the end of the day, when I have been sweating and sitting in dirt and sand all day they start to loosen up and feel soft, but by then they also stink of body odor. I love Tanzania! I talked to my mother yesterday, and of course she asked how the thesis research was going. About that..., well, it has become my excuse to return here someday. Wish me luck in this big, dirty city.
