... on a Matatu in the village of Jilore. The reason why this is a necessity is bc there is no food in my village and the closest market town is Malindi and everyone knows I like to eat a lot and food does not stay long without refrigeration. I plan on investing in a raft and just floating down the river to avoid Matatu's bc of their fares and uncomfortable sitting arrangements. I love the lack of organization but at times feel overwhelmed bc these people believe I am ...

'Baraka' (Ant) and 'Amina' (Lucy) - meaning 'blessing' and 'amen' - by Ali the Shifoga chairman.

It now seems that after San Siro the whole town knows our names and we can't go anywhere without hearing "Baraka’ or 'Amina’ being yelled across the marketplace. Ho hum.

Last weekend we went up the coast to Gedi and Watamu. Gedi has some excellent ruins of a 15th century village which were really ...

Malindi, Kenya journeykenyaWe caught a Matatu all the way to Malindi from Mombasa ( not the most comfortable 2 hours, but very reasonably priced at 2 pounds. We would have gone by proper bus but couldn't find the bus station. In Malindi it was raining heavily, but our hotel was comfortable and empty. We went to the local Italian for dinner, which we couldn't find but collected another new friend on the way who ...
Malindi, Kenya brisko... clothed as it was so humid. We saw a few locals who were trying to sell wood carvings etc and who were telling us about how few tourists they have had since the elections and how poor they are and how they need business. We enjoyed an expensive dinner at the Italian restaurant on the sea front and ended up having a very hot and sticky night of restless sleep.
Malindi, Kenya mandy_karl... was equivilent to £6... I nearly died. The servents are also really nice and Joseph makes me food sometimes so I won't go hungry. He knows French toast which is a bonus. On Sunday we went to a beach at some friends houses, it was soo beautiful. Hopefully I'll put some pictures on here if I work out how. Otherwise google for Bamburi Beach. I also went there on Wednesday, unfortunately I got my flip flops stolen =( don't know where to find Animal or Billabong flip flops ...
Mombasa, Kenya lori-lou... week too that reminded me that you can't necessarily treat them like normal kids - though for the most part thats absolutely what you have to do. I thought they were taking the proverbial p!ss out of teacher by asking to go to the toilet so often and en masse too so I'd been only allowing one at a time. The other teacher then informs me that the 'porridge' they are fed is of such low quality that it makes them have to go to the toilet exceptionally frequently and if they ask you ...
Mtwapa, Mombasa, Kenya wardie... and I went with one of the workers for a tour. Kwetu has been established for ten years, training people to make a living from local abundance and showing off various technologies. They have many solar panels for electricity and solar driers for all the many fruits and herbs that grow around here. There's plenty of sun. I was anxious to see the aquaculture. In addition to making a host of natural food and medicine products, Kwetu trains locals to farm ...
Mtwapa, Kenya cpricciAfter a few wacky days in the city with luxuries like soft serve and nandos, our volunteer program is over. More sad goodbyes, this time to the 11 others we have shared personal space with for 3 months. 5 of us are still together for the minute, having boarded an overnight bus to the coast for some pure holiday making. We spent a night in Mombasa, Kenyas 2nd largest city, and then promptly decided it was **** - who comes to africa for the cities?! Another crazy bus trip later (complete ...
