What is great about backpacking with no fixed agenda or itinerary, is that you can make changes to your plans at any time, based on how you feel or based on things you read & hear. That was the case with our visit to Vienna & Kitzbuhel. We had not planned to visit Austria, but since we were so close to Vienna we decided to go there & since we were in Austria, ...

... we couldn't see it that well because there were clouds covering the mountain tops on that side of the valley. But the view was still amazing. Because at the head of the valley was a smaller snow-covered mountain called Johanisberg. And descending from the mountain and into the valley was the largest glacier in the eastern Alps, the Pasterzengletscher. We later learned that the glacier has retreated 2 km in recent history, and is expected to be completely gone in 35 years ...

This nineteenth-century Romanesque castle was built on a rugged hilltop for King Ludwig II. King Ludwig was a great admirer and supporter of Richard Wagner, a world-renouned opera composer. So much so that he named the castle ...
