Hot stuff

... edge off the ocean, which sent in gentle wavelets. However, occasionally the waves would build themselves up into a big surge, full of the frigid power of the Pacific Ocean, threatening to sweep me off my perch and giving me a chilly shock. Then the waves would calm down, and the delicious spring water would take effect once again. And if I got too cold, I could always retreat to the hot pools!

On our return journey ...

Black bears and blue jays

... into the trees, and all was still.

After a day of exploration, we stopped at Meares Island and followed the Big Tree Walk, through magnificent old growth forest. A nosy blue jay decided that we were great entertainment. It investigated my fleece as suitable nesting material, then hung around to watch us take pictures, hoping to find more mischief to cause.
<br ...

Caution! Bears crossing!

... each fallen log was home to a score of plants growing out of it, feeding on its nutrients. All was rich and green. Here, once again, we found the thick-barked Douglas firs, thrusting up into the canopy. These ancient giants restricted the amount of light that reached the forest floor. Occasionally one of these giants gave in to the weight of centuries or the push of the wind and came smashing down. Then the race was on as smaller plants gained ...

On to Tofino!

... great sights, met some VERY outgoing Stellar's Jays, and drove into the rain and cloudiness of the Pacific Coast. We got checked into the Wickaninnish (have I mentioned this is a great place?), sat around absorbing the ocean sounds, frogs, birds, and wine...then enjoyed a fabulous meal at the hotel restaurant. After dinner, we decided to walk on the beach - about 45 degrees with a 20 mph wind - and returned to the room for wine and sleep. More tomorrow...

Surf Canada!

... front of our hotel, so we headed up the coast to the next little bay. The waves weren't great but it was a lot less cold than I expected and I managed a few short rides. With snow capped mountains in the distance it was definitely a surreal experience. I'll have to say I prefer the tropical waters of Hawaii and Costa Rica but I paddled out again the next day, this time ...

What a lovely little place

The next morning we wandered and followed the directions to the bus stop until the last vital junction where it was nowhere to be seen. Luckily the couple we'd chatted to turned up and so we could follow them to a tiny place hidden behind some trees with no signs for anyone looking for a place to catch a bus. When we got to the station they let us go first as our bus was going 15 minutes before theirs. Well, that's what they thought. I was sat on our bus looking ...

... for all the good weather that we had already enjoyed. We reached Victoria after a 5 hour drive (220 miles) and went straight for the "Victoria Clipper' ferry, a fast catamaran that links Victoria to Seattle. It was still drizzling as we set off - I suppose this helped us to realise that our time in Canada was over and that it was time to move on. I have a slight reflection here. We have travelled almost from the ...

BLOW UP TOFINO

... In the morning, we picked. We moved ladders around and put apples in buckets that hung from us like aprons. Some apples fell and hit us in our noses. Once, an apple hit my head, bounced, and came down on my head again. We filled three big bins with Eve's help. Cool Dip only had enough trees for us to pick until noon. Johnny and I made $20 apiece. We hitched on. Theo and Ann, an older couple in a station wagon, lifted us after seeing us play catch. Theo ...
