Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

... alone is so iconic and significant, embedded into the pages of History. I don't know for a fact, but I bet the Statesmen came up here during a break in their discussions and enjoyed the spectacle. I can hear Stresemann and Briand and Chamberlain chatting away about the fate of nations and holding the prospect of peace in their hands, whilst at the same time making touristy chit-chat about the fab view.

When asked if they speak English, the locals will often say “a little” but seemingly understand you fairly well. Only on a couple of occasions did someone defer.

The Swiss transportation system is as fantastic as they say it is. It is an interconnected system of trains, buses, boats and, even, cableways. While they were not always on-time to the minute, we did not experience more than a 2-3 minute delay. Check out the pics ...
