Sabene, our local guide took us throughout this town of 70,000. She was born here, went to school here and is raising her family here. Bamberg University has 10,000 students so the town has a youthful vibe.
We saw a pharmacy that has been in business since 1427. I can't get my mind around that kind of history and tradition ...
... later, you could lower your taxes if you redecorated in the baroque style covering up the timber. As a result you see both kinds of construction, sometimes on the same building. We went to the cathedral but it was not as impressive as others we’ve seen. However, it was built in the 11th century and houses the tombs of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II, the only Pope buried in Germany.
Walking through the cathedral square we came to the Old and New ...
... had to take the old uncomfortable one...and it was even darker, and know I had no light. Damn! My bum hurt the next day. But that night we actually had to change hotels because the hostel was hosting about 50 8th graders! They came the night before and made more noise then I thought possible. We were happy to leave. So we changed to another hotel just down the street.
The next morning we got the bus and were off to Heidelberg.
... city was really nice and different from Munich, it was really never bombed in the war so there are so many original very old building still standing. Also we were able to see another 2 castles, not the same castles as before but more of a mansion style with amazing gardens. Bayreuth was really cool and I wish I had more time to look around but it is time to see where I was born.
... been working on. After the games, we had a nice team dinner at a local indian restaurant...although the service was a bit slow. After a full stomach and a full day of games I took a nap and nearly forgot to wake up for the party which was just one floor down from the room everyone was sleeping in. It was a decent party and the team that drove up from Italy definitely won the party ...and i think ...
Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany djc94... and drove through some nice villages, very typical of how you would picture Germany with wooden fronted houses, lots of woods and rolling valleys. Its so quite driving through the towns and villages it can be a bit eery at times but it was a welcome relief and we were defiantly beginning to unwind.
Money has to go a long way traveling so I like to tell people when we see great value no matter if it makes us sound a bit cheep which we ...
... the 9.50am departure time came and went, we became increasingly agitated. Announcements were made which were incomprehensible to us and didn't seem to enlighten our fellow travellers. A young lady informed Margaret that all trains to Bamberg had been cancelled for reasons not explained. What would become of us? All the hotels in Nuremberg were full due to the food convention and we didn't relish the thought of sleeping on a railway bench. At the information desk we were ...
Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany cullism... Schlenkerla Rauchbier, a smoke beer. It was really good. Started like smoke and ended like a lager. It was really good. The food was amazing! Beth had Schweinschintzel, breaded pork and I had a roast leg and pork and of course they both came with potatoes and salad with onion vinegar dressing. Just amazing! Good ol' meat and potatoes with beer. What I grew up on! We navigated back through Bamburg, after locating our parking spot with some difficulty and arrived ...
Bamberg, Germany elizabessie... arrive and we met with most of them! It was going to be a good camp. That night I met with Zach from Moncton and some other people from Germany, with Meenzer as well and really really late : Liis and Chris arrived. I slept short and had mostly talked with people around... we also went out to drink at a tavern and the local white is good there! --------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- ---------- October 5 A hard ...
Bamberg, Germany maplefanta... there is nothing to do. Everything appears to be closed. At least most of the cafes are open so we walked around a lot and took our time at meals. We went to the Dom, because I figured if any building is open on a Sunday it's going to be the church. It was open but of course it was also in service so we quietly walked around and tried not to disturb anyone. We also walked around the rest of the city and it is quite a beautiful place.
