      ... the setting for the 'Romantic Christmas Market' which lived up to its name: the path into the grounds was lined with flaming torches and lanterns, leading the way to the traditional craft stalls, and on into the inner courtyard where a huge Christmas tree stood, lighting up the palace facade and the stalls selling food and drinks, with people huddling around fire pits of burning logs to sip their gluwhein, to the background ...

      41 kms AM - Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum". PM - The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving ...
