We headed out into the heavy rain to escape the flooding in Christchurch. The Transalpine train journey was absolutely incredible. Lots of photos of snow and mountains. I braved the open air car for most of the way but so worth it! After leaving thr train behind at Arthur's Pass, we headed to Hokitika for a walk on the beach. And then on to Franz Josef Glacier. Wow!
Today is the day of the helicopter flight over the Franz-Josef and Fox Glaciers. En route we stopped at Lake Ianthe and admired the view across the lake to the snow capped mountains, including Mount Cook which is the highest in New Zealand.
Then on to Franz Josef to book in for the helicopter flights. Most people took the longer flight but …
... of the spectacular alpine scenery was blocked from our view with low hanging cloud and fog; we could see the misty outlines of hills and high mountains rising up all around us, but no clear views at all of the dramatic scenery we know if hidden out there...we were very disappointed. There were a few stretches of the road that were pretty hairy, though...in one particularly twisty section, ...
... forward to. Id seen photos of people walking around the glacier and though it looked amazing so was really excited to have a go myself!
So far we'd been amazingly lucky with the weather and had always been able to do the activities that we'd wanted without any dramas. But to arrive to masses of cloud cover we suddenly realised that there was a pretty high possibility that we might not even get to see the glacier never mind hike it.

I really enjoyed this hotel, the view of the mountains was beautiful and the reception desk was really friendly and helpful. It is located on the main road and close to the hot pools and some amazing restaurants.
