Journey across to Napier today. Passed Mt Doom (Ruapehu), but low cloud so didn't really see anything. Lunch in Taupo, then went to see Huka Falls, a spectacular set of rapids where the river flows through a narrow gorge. Arrived in Napier. Had a small bottle of fizzy each in a bar where there seemed to be a load of old people doing a meat raffle. Ate tapas. Lots of pubs and bars sell small individual bottles of sparkling wine - why don't you see this in the UK? Gill fizzy wine total : 5
napier, New Zealand chilliwineInteresting wine & cultural tour this morning. Started by meeting a Maori chief on the top of a sacred mountain. We didn't feel up to the full Maori greeting ceremony (which involves singing and god knows what else) so just had a chat with him. He seemed like a nice bloke, but it was bloody freezing. Then went to taste lots of wine. Started at Black Barn winery which also had a farmers market and an outdoor theatre. Gill noticed the Zepelin winery (which is a wine we have bought in the UK...
napier, New Zealand chilliwineCafe breakfast followed by a wander around the shops. Bought postcards, played scrabble, fairly relaxing day.
napier, New Zealand chilliwineAs you can imagine, gentle reader, there was a shortage of good cheer & bonhomie on the bus as we left Christchurch on the Sunday after the 2nd test. That mood pretty much continued on our arrival in Napier. Several of our number had booked a trip to a vineyard but the rest of us just mooched gloomily around the town. In the 1930's, Napier was flattened by a small earthquake which didn't kill many people. It gave the City Fathers a chance to rebuild it how they liked, and they chose conte...

Napier, North Island, New Zealand hadwinI woke up this morning feeling a bit blue, like my holiday in New Zealand was nearly over and I suppose it is really, I have no more tramps left in the schedule and after a day off would start my relative sprint back up to Auckland for my onward flight to Australia. I've had a lovely time on South Island and could quite easily plan another 3/4 week trip of tramping and generally bumming around no I know where everything is. But, its not over ...
Napier, North Island, New Zealand travellingjools... on the Richter scale, and that of course there had been many fatalities, mainly caused by the fires which raged afterwards. These were caused by chemist's bunsen burners which were close to flammable chemicals. After the quake, the town had an amazing spirit which led them to rebuild their city with pride! The first building was built with rivets rather than the modern method of welding, so that the whole town could hear it being built and boost morale. All the ...
Napier, North Island, New Zealand phileasbeckOn the way, my bus stopped to a nature center where I saw my first kiwi: OK it was in the dark and he was sleeping: so you could not really see him but still my first kiwi. The other part of the center where a lot of place the bird watching and an information center to learn how they live in the wild. Including a ...
Napier, New Zealand worldtaste... the views of Lake Rotorua on the edge of the pools. Andrew agreed it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be, but still said that he was going to have his steak. We got ready for dinner and were met by our bus that was taking us to the Mitai dinner, a traditional Hangi dinner that included a Maori performance. We had been to a similar dinner in Hawaii and enjoyed it so we had high hopes. After a glass of wine, we were escorted down to a small stream where the Maori ...
