Journey across to Napier today. Passed Mt Doom (Ruapehu), but low cloud so didn't really see anything. Lunch in Taupo, then went to see Huka Falls, a spectacular set of rapids where the river flows through a narrow gorge. Arrived in Napier. Had a small bottle of fizzy each in a bar where there seemed to be a load of old people doing a meat raffle. Ate tapas. Lots of pubs and bars sell small individual bottles of sparkling wine - why don't you see this in the UK? Gill fizzy wine total : 5

Interesting wine & cultural tour this morning. Started by meeting a Maori chief on the top of a sacred mountain. We didn't feel up to the full Maori greeting ceremony (which involves singing and god knows what else) so just had a chat with him. He seemed like a nice bloke, but it was bloody freezing. As you can imagine, gentle reader, there was a shortage of good cheer & bonhomie on the bus as we left Christchurch on the Sunday after the 2nd test. That mood pretty much continued on our arrival in Napier. Several of our number had booked a trip to a vineyard but the rest of us just mooched gloomily around the town. Hi folks, a week from today we will be on our way to LA! From there we fly to Buffalo via Chicago to see some old friends of Jenny's: her "American Parents", as she calls them, with whom she stayed 45 years ago on a high school exchange for one year. ... They smell SO bad- you cannot imagine. When we arrived at Cape Palliser we climbed the 256 stairs to the lighthouse which sits on the cliff there and took in views of the coast. After a brief stay at Te Puke and an unsuccessful few days jobs hunting, I decided to continue driving south towards the Hawkes Bay Region. Unfortunately the hostels in Napier and the nearby town of Hastings tend to be fully booked in February and March as a mass flux of backpackers migrate here for the fruit picking season. Napier is a lovely little town (although it's bigger than I expected it to be!) on the seaside with some fantastic weather - finally, my body is allowed to be warm again!
