Fri 10th Feb..... wine country We had a wonderful drive from Akaroa to Blenheim through Kaikoura (whale watching mecca). Kaikoura is on a peninsula jutting out from the coastline. We did not go on a whale watch as the sea was too rough and I do not have good sea legs!! We saw lots of fur seals and dolphins along the route - there were lots of look-out places. There used to be whaling stations in the past in this area but now it is a tourist attraction. We had lunch in Hislops in Kaikoura whic...

... a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the exact worst times for me to get there on days I work, so that works out.

The soreness from work, the blandness of the work and the loss of my camera have combined with the antsy feeling I got from sitting around waiting for work for a couple of weeks to turn Blenheim's taste sour to me. I think I'll probably leave after this week and get on with my getting on. We'll see how some things go today and tomorrow, but hopefully I'll soon be back on the road.
Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand jwatson... but were careful not to get between the seals and the ocean, or they might charge. They looked pretty happy and lazy, but they can move fast if they get mad! After we saw the seals, we went to a sheep station to learn how to shear a sheep. Peter, the owner of the sheep station, shears two sheep a day, every day, to show people how it is done. He has Drysdale sheep, that have super long wool. First, he introduced us to Ram Man, his ram who is seven years old, and ...
Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand zolab09/02/09: Arrivée à Picton.
Picton, South Island, New Zealand carolinetogna... of my time here. (life is rough, I know!). I will stay with Stephen & Tami until the 29th when I will head down to Queenstown for New Year's. Hope to link up and drive down there with Phil Rodgers & Rachel Wagner, friend from the TARS in Halifax who are also visiting during this time! Small world! I will be meeting up with a german girl, Lena, who I met in Raglan for New Year's and then she and I will do the Routeburn trek together from 2-Jan to 4-Jan. The Routeburn ...
Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand noradonaldThe road this morning leaving Takaka was carnage but at least the waters have subsided and I could finally get out. The rain stopped at 8pm last night with a few light showers during the evening. If it continued to rain heavy, I think our sanctuary (The Pub) would have been under water too. On the road to Nelson there were countless landslides, fields which looked like lakes and swollen rivers brown with mud and debris from the surrounding peaks. I don't ...
Waikawa, South Island, New Zealand christospOur holiday is nearing its end and we are aiming for a ferry for the 7th of April. We still had a few days to spend and put them to good use in the Marlborough Sounds, not as expressive as Fiordland but more accessible and very pretty. We had passed Marlborough Sounds when we first came to the South Island but thought we'd give them a bit more attention and drive to the furthest point you can reach by car. It was a very very rainy day though ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand johannajulien... huge a good two hundred at least i think, all swiming around in a big group. The boat dropped us off in their path and we jumped in. God it was amazing. Loads of tehm just came up really close to about a foot or so and were just swimming along beside us for ages. They were jumping out of the water right in front of us and doing twirls and massive leaps out of the water. It was brilliant although the trip back was was brutal for waves and the ...
Picton, New Zealand raycoleman... the guy at the hostel who made my reservation for me the night before only booked me on the bus until Blenheim. So now I am in Blenheim. When I tried to find the hostel earlier today I turned right on a street I should have turned left on making me more sweaty and tired than I had been prior to my arrival in Blenheim. The people at the hostel where I will be ...
