Jen, Emma and I left bright and early for our flight out of Budapest. One of John's Croatian friends arranged a driver - interesting that he was the long jump champion for Croatia and still holds 5th place out of all previous jumpers. The airport was packed but we checked in and made it through security in time. First time in years that we didn't …
The Russian adventure continues. Getting out of the country proves to be almost as challenging as getting into it. We get close to the border and stop at a checkpoint; border patrol jumps on board and looks at all passports. Then we get to the building for passport control and everyone has to get off the bus to go through the gate. There were a …
... the final hour back up on the top deck, alone, watching the Swedish islands float by in the warmth of the evening sun which had finally decided to show it's face, unlike the Estonia-Finland journey three days before. What I saw of those islands as we cruised toward Stockholm was beautiful in a classic Scandinavian way. Big coloured wooden houses spread out on the hills - some of them seemingly inaccessible by any means other than boat and one with a Swedish flag ...
... over the 40-plus years I had been coming here was that for the most part, they are quiet, reserved, and soft-spoken. Not this guy! He was loud, his voice abrasive, and his manner was anything but reserved. It was not a pleasant two-hours.
We pulled into Lappeenranta station shortly after 17:00 (5:00 PM). Waiting on the platform for us was Helena, my ex-wife, here to give us a ride to her mother’s farm where Hoki and I would be staying. Though, ...
I have decided seen as I am here for so long I should learn a bit of the language so far I know Moi- Hello and Kiitos is thank you. So I am going to try to learn a word/ phrase every day.
Today I joined my flatmate and her German friends on a trip to Suomenlinna Isle which is a short ferry ride away ...
How has this hotel rated in the past?
Location is good, within walking distance to the city centre and the breakfast is quite nice but this place needs to be revamped. Everything from the rundown lobby to the ancient furniture in the rooms to the uncomfortable beds and the dilapidated carpets. Fix it before renting it out!

Historical Traveler Reviews Scandic Hotel Continental Helsinki
Finnair bus is just at the back of the hotel
10-15 minutes walk to railway station and probably 20 minutes to market square. There is a tram stop right outside the hotel main entrance. Anyone who does not want to walk can pay 2 Euro and take the tram.
Staffs are quite friendly which is pretty rare in the service sector in Finland
Stayed 3 nights but on different dates. Generally the rooms are of good size. One of the nights we had a extra bed which is a sofa bed good for one adult or two kids
Breakfast is fair and quite crowed. Finnair crews (those flying the Asia routes) stay in this hotel plus a lot of Asians
The Scandic Continental is very well located, opposite a lake with lovly walks around it, also buses and trolly busses stop outside if you find walking a problem into the centre of Helsinki--3 stops.
The Scandic Continental is situated on the fringe of Helsinki, overlooking a large lake and served by the airport bus from Helsinki Airport to the City. In fact this is one of the finer points about the hotel, the airport bus only makes 2 stops and the hotel is the first so you cannot go wrong.
Good value business hotel
Stayed on business for 4 nights, on the 5th floor Ambassador's club room. Rooms are a similar size to regular rooms, nicely furnished and well insulated (they have to be!). Ambassadors club does not seem worth the money (hardly any of the Hilton benefits you may be used to), but a nice, business friendly hotel.
Receptionists seemed exceptionally helpful, ensuring Taxis always arrived as booked despite the bus drivers strike. Addition of free wireless was an added bonus, along with the free drinks vouchers for Hilton HHonors customers.
Reccomended for business - free shuttle bus to Nokia House during the week is an added bonus.
Excellent sauna and swimming pool - rich breakfast
We are two families from Greece, nine persons and we stayed at this hotel on August 13th till August 15th and from August 19th till August 21st . The rooms were very spacious and clean , the breakfast was delicious ( I can only compare it with the Hilton Prague) and the sauna and the swimming pool ( excellent view ) were superb , but why only from 7a.m.to 10.00 am ? We would have felt better if the people in the reception were more friendly ( of course I can understand them , because they were very busy )
Not the best or the worst
The hotel fell somewhere in the middle of the two previous critiques.
Pros - Excellent transport from airport; very convenient on-site airport check-in. Very easy walking distance from Opera House and Sibelius Centre/Concert Hall. Bright, young, helpful staff.
Nice room, excellent shower. Adjacent to excellent public transport system.
Cons - Dreary, unchanging (albeit copious) breakfast. Mediocre restaurant. No coffee shop. Bar much to small for a 500-room hotel. Room service stops at 11pm. Sleepy, if willing, housekeeping department.
Neutral - 1 kilometre walk from town centre.
Would I stay there again? Probably, particularly if, as on this occasion, we were attending 4 operas in 8 days
Scandic Continental Helsinki is splendid
The lavish breakfast and the lovely pool and sauna made the hotel very attractive both of our stays. During one, we were upgraded, and the superior rooms really are special; but the regular rooms are OK too. (For some reason, the pool is free but there is a daily fee for use of the exercise room.)For anyone visiting the superb Helsinki opera, virtually across the street, this is an ideal choice.
We have just stayed for a long weekend and we were very pleased with the hotel. We had a special deal with lastminute and I was apprehensive after reading the previous review as I had already booked it.The room was beautiful, at the front of the hotel, overlooking the lake and the bathroom was spacious and spotlessly clean. The buffet breakfast was very good, although we did not have a meal in the restaurant. My only negative comment was that the bar prices were expensive. The staff were friendly and helpful and even accommodated my daughter who stayed with us for one night.
When we checked in at 6 pm, the clerk at the counter started calling to housekeeping checking do they have a room ready! Apparently all the rooms were dirty AT 6 PM and she had to check by calling that is there even one ready room or not. With a little hassle she found a room for us.
