Durham and York
Finished the cereal we've had left over at the hostel. Walked to the car, filled up the tank just outside Edinburgh and headed towards Durham. Stopped on the coast after Dunbar for a few photos of the cliffs. Continued the long drive south to Durham. Arrived at The Sands car park at 2. Had a quiche and a slice of orange cake at a Mediterranean bakery west across the river from the Durham peninsula. Came up to Palace Green where we saw the entrance to Durham Castle and more ...
Day 10
... holds court at one of the tables near the entrance. I'm the only patron. Maybe that explains the special treatment I get, with a chat about vegetarianism (she's never eaten any meat) and various recommendations. Her husband/employee serves her food at table and at one point, he even brings in a large container of flavoured rice for her to taste and approve. The food is average but it's worth a visit just to see the "queen" presiding over ...
Airports and aeroplanes
The thing about airports is, they're boring and expensive. Well, Hong Kong's not expensive but being bored does mean that I'm probably munching on something. I call my best friend James on Viber which is free for us and we chatted for about 20mins. It's at this moment while ...

I hate shopping at the best of times, and late-night shopping until 11 pm a couple of weeks before Christmas is not my idea of fun. The only bright spot of the entire evening is a brass band (maybe a former colliery band?) playing Christmas carols. Don't even like Christmas but they still manage to bring a lump to my throat.

Days 7 and 8
... as ever. We then walk up Brocco Bank to what used to be a warren of student halls and flats, searching around in vain for Earnshaw Hall, where I lived in my first year. After consulting Google Maps, I see a pile of rubble where it used to be. Earnshaw, along with other nearby halls, was apparently pulled down in 2006 to make way for the new Endcliffe student village. All very modern and fabulous, I'm sure, but I can't help feeling sad.
