Jambiani, Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania
... visa unlike the US citizens who pay $100 and the Pakistanis who pay $200!!!). We arrived at Entebbe airport at around 8pm; it was more surreal coming back than going because of course I was repeating my first arrival in Uganda. It was amazing how different the experience was: I feel so at home here now! I remember how scared I was leaving the airport for the first time, not knowing what lay ahead ... In hindsight I can see that I've been quite incredibly blessed during my time here!
Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania priya.akhurst... isolated; there wasn't another muzungu in sight! People came out of their houses to stare at us and with the light beginning to fade, there was that strange twilight sense of leaving civilisation. Arriving at the Shehe bungalows only served to exacerbate this: there was only 1 other family in the whole place and they were leaving the next day! I was thrilled by our accommodation: it was right on the beach and I could hear the sound of the sea through our windows. In ...
Jambiani, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania priya.akhurst... my stroll. One child I encountered seemed to be mentally handicapped. He had his fingers in his mouth and he was drooling continuously while making loud and seemingly nonsensical noises. I didn't put 2 and 2 together about his condition until a few seconds after I'd taken his picture. I partially regret having snapped his photo because I hate to think that I was exploiting him, but honestly, it didn't hit me straight away ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania ayack... the locals were all laughing at me for some reason. I have never really understood why Africans do this I put it down to a lack of education and stupidness in many ways. I was dressed respectifully as required by the Muslim culture out there and was just minding my own buisness. Some times working in Africa can really get to you just because the locals are really stuipd in many ways, I never look at them and the things they wear and laugh at them or the ...
Jambiani, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania richardcowley... back to Dar Es Salaam and it reminded me of the barf-fest in the movie "Stand by Me". The bags were handed out early on by a brave sailor braving the lurching of the boat and once one person started, we were surrounded by the dulcet tones of vomit, slightly louder than the chinese kung fu movie that was on for our viewing pleasure! Unfortunately even Cameron wasn't immune and he had a pretty miserable journey back to Dar.Luckily we were on the fast ferry so it was only 2 hours of misery!!!
Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania thego... my tour group mates, who are mostly quite friendly - if generally rather childish Brits in their mid- to late twenties. They tend to go more for drinking alcohol and playing games than engaging in meaningful conversation. Perhaps it's because they're on vacation. (Hey, I'm trying to be kind to them!) Or perhaps it's because we can choose or avoid random conversation partners, but we can neither choose nor avoid fellow members of a group tour that we are on. Now I'll ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania bangkokrandy... which decompose and provide homes for fish and crabs. Mangrove trees are vital as they protect the coastline from tidal action and erosion. As the Ranger explained, "Without the mangrove trees there would probably be no Zanzibar!" On the way back from Jozani Forest we visited Zala Park, founded by a school teacher in 1994 mainly for educational purposes. It's a small family-run zoo where you can see reptiles, chameleons and snakes at (very!) close quarters ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania manzara... on to you and try to suck you dry. Except all they want is your money..of course. Everywhere has them, though these guys are good, they seriously won't leave you alone. This guy followed us all over town for most of the day after i put on the last entry. It was Dave, Megan(a fellow volunteer, Shaff(one of our doctors) and me and the leech to start. He ended up selling Megan these cheep batteries for her camera that didn't last two pictures before they died. Then ...
Jambiani, Tanzania maleorderbride... and electricity is unpredictable. I tried to download pictures the other day to no avail...its frustrating...oh well, i should have expected it from travelling in Thailand, though access is much tougher to come by here in Zanzibar. Bottom line is its been eye opening and exciting everyday, and i don't expect that to change any time soon. I hope everyone is good back home, don't hesitate to email me on my personal, thats the first thing i check here. Cheers until next time.
