... Sok. There was no train that day due to the holiday. Bugger! So I wandered off to the bus station, via an ATM (I have never used my credit card to get cash from an ATm in another country so I was a bit nervous - remember it was a holiday so it the card got swallowed I wasn't going to get it back in a hurry), where I was able to buy a ticket on the bus to Surat Thani. The water was starting to warm up, however, as the days went by (we took water/air temp and tide levels every day before doing the Obs from the Rock), so hopefully they've found evidence of nests since I left. If they do find a nest, they mark the location, and then usually move the eggs to a safer spot. However, the number of nests on the Andaman coast has declined precipitously - they only found 8 nests on Koh Pra Tong last year. (The colder water temperature, though bad ...

So it started with a rewriting of traditional Batak music and putting on a concert by musicians from Jakarta and using the proceeds to start planting trees all over the island. His goals include promoting an environmental education program in the grade schools and awareness raising regarding the value of Toba to the Batak people and the need for its conservation. So I spend some time with Alfonso, he shares his work and his goals with me ...
Penang, Malaysia rawhideone... gearing up for the high season. We're dropped off in the thriving town of Nang Thong which is as sleepy as the resort. There are plenty of shops, ATMS, optometrists (nearly every 3rd store is KT Optic), restaurants, massage places and parked cars with large cardboard TAXI signs on their windscreens. We stroll around for a whole of 10 minutes before Dad and the kids want to go back to the resort. It's too hot and nothing is appealing here ...
Phangnga, Thailand tric1003... offering stays on floating raft guesthouses and boat tours. We tried to make the trip to the lake, but money and time prevented us from visiting. Instead, we enjoyed leisurely tubing down the river. I was floating wearing a crown of leaves, Aaron was floating wielding a bamboo staff, and both were using giant leaves as umbrellas. We interrupted our tubing only to rope-swing into the river a few times. The ...

We didn't think that we suffered from this side effect as we'd been in hot countries for weeks now and had't had any suburn at all. However, we had always naturally avoided the sun, sticking to the shade and covering up as much as possible. On the beach however things are slightly different and after an hour in the sun despite our factor 30 sunblock we were both ...

Ao Nang, Thailand steveandina... night with Tom and Salli--a perfect way to bookend my trip. I'm going to miss this place so much, that it's hard to believe I chose to come home a fe days earlier than planned. But when I start thinking I made a mistake, I remember how much I really do miss everyone at home...and how excited I am for mexican food. Whiskey buckets and pad thai are great, but I'm ready for some margartias and chips and salsa. Well, maybe one more bucket before I go....
