We left Plovdiv for a long day on the bus to the city of Nesebar on the Black Sea. After a two hour drive we arrived in Stefan's hometown of Kazanlak in the Valley of the Roses. Here they manufacture 90% of the world's rose oil. The roses were done blooming, but we passed FIELDS of sunflowers and lavender. Gorgeous!! Also a couple of wagons pulled by horses with pom poms. ... the sea. I'm going to be disappointed with the views when I get back to coffee-ing in Lytham. Then moved the car - it was busy when we arrived, and we thought we'd left the car in a decent spot, but when we came back, it just might have been a towaway zone. If so, we were lucky so thanks to whoever or whatever was looking out for us. Moved it to a proper car park and went to the beach. ... one of the churches ( how did they make such good maps 800 years ago? And how come this tiny place - called Mesembria then - was so important?) and a bit of sleeping / reading on the beach. No sun loungers available yet, but lots of activity suggesting they will be soon. Maybe the season starts on June 1st.

... furnished like it would have been when it was built in the 19th century. There were also some examples of very intricately worked and engraved metal jewellery - my favourite was the large pendant with a face in it - coloured cloth from a village near Burgas and a facsimile of an old photo of female traditional folk-singers from the local region.
