    Where's the sand?

    ... out the large sand box (yes, sand!) so we got out the boys shovels and buckets and they spent some time digging. We finally headed back to the apartment with dark clouds on the horizon. We had promised the boys to try out the large bouncy house playground and maybe even play mini-golf in the evening, but the forecast was nasty and the radar ominous, so instead we joined everyone else for dinner at a nice Italian restaurant along the beach ...

    ... up out of concrete beaches. So, while we had an excellent meal at a local seafood restaurant, the boys were already beginning to discuss what they like about the beach in North Carolina. I think we were getting some serious homesickness vibes. The only thing that seemed to bring joy to them was the plate loaded with fresh mussels, Blake's new favorite drink 'Cockta', and the thought that there might still be a beach to be found tomorrow.

    The next day we went into Venice. Very enjoyable ferry and approaching Venice from the water is magical and the way merchants have arrived for thousands of years. In our case we were only two of the thousands of tourists who take over the city every day of the year.

    We just had an enjoyable wander around the city as we had seen the key sights of Venice when we last visited (2007). We found prices OK ...

    ... are listed on the UNESCO Heritage sites and features vast underground canyons through which the Reka river runs. Apparently, people have lived in the caves from Prehistoric ages. It was a really wonderful experience walking through the many chambers in the eerie darkness. I half expected Gollum to jump out at me. Unfortunately no photography was allowed but I guess the best images are the ones etched in your mind.

    Our ship was moored at the smaller of two passenger vessel terminals. I had the sense that it once was the terminal for steerage passengers from England starting the eastern leg of the "Grand Tour." It was a cavernous building with dark, unlit and presumably unused corners. Portions were "cooled" by post-WW2 ceiling fans, except in the security area. There was no cooling in that area.
