... themselves before the Marine Corps made it to Guam to attempt to take the island back. We succeeded.. obviously and in less than a month of landing Guam was ours again! The pillboxes were a little difficult to get into but I swam out around climbed a little and squeezed myself in for some pics. I also got a shot from a hill of Asan Beach which is Guam's version of Normandy where the Marines took the first beach of Guam from the Japanese.
Oceanview, Guam guamblog... a dive sale they do for a monthly customer appreciation day. Unfortunately they didn't have any real killer deals that weren't way out of my league as to what I can afford for dive gear. ( the cheapest gear packages were still around 900 dollars for low end stuff). However they did have a boat going out for 25 dollars so last minute we decided to grab some tanks and jump on it before it left the harbor. The 2 dives went out to "Blue and White", which is just outside the ...
Oceanview, Guam guamblog... after 3 hours of Guam's sun shining down on us.
We swam around for about an hour, just relaxing and enjoying pure nature at it's best. We even hiked down the river a bit to find a 2nd waterfall that was a beauty in it's own. The masquito infested river to it was worth the extra hike! Before we left to head back to the car I had to conquer this waterfall. Even though I about wet my pants several times thinking about it, I ...
Yigo, Guam guamblog... and was used to transport war materials and personnel throughout the Pacific. On January 24, 1943 the Tokai was observed anchored in Apra Harbor by the US submarine FLYING FISH. Assuming that the ship was soon to leave the harbor, the FLYING FISH waited outside the entrance for 3 days. With no movement of the ship or any other vessels, the FLYING FISH fired two torpedoes set to run at 1' depth. One of the torpedoes ran aground on the ...
Oceanview, Guam guamblog... cove was Beautiful, full of colorful fish and untouched reef with all sorts of life. There was a ropeswing and a nice little rock to jump off of... We snorkelled around for a few hours, hiked around the outer rock cliffs to get a nice view of the southern beaches and headed back. My camera took in some water and hasnt worked since so Im letting it dry out for a few days, hopeing it gets better. If not/ its a good thing its got a warranty!
Oceanview, Guam guamblog... the diving shop gave us 7 POUNDS not 7 KILOS. Our fault (we should know be able to feel the difference) but also his: he should know better. And why do I breathe so difficultly? Sure, we are both struggling, which is stressful, trying to stay down is hard work and there is current but still, ... . I forget about my own problems since I see Dr T has more. And yes, I forgot to mention: it is the first dive with our new camera ...
Tamuning, Guam tonyandmarina... let us know today, we are leaving to check out the Days Inn hotel.' We DO move to the next room, with all the kitchen utilities I gathered and washed. And indeed go to the Days Inn, American style motel... We step in. Dr T: 'Hi, can we see a room?' 2 receptionists STARE at us and at each other. The way people would stare if you entered a restaurant and asked for the last model BMW. T repeats: 'We would like to see a room.' Answer: 'Which ...
Tamuning, Guam tonyandmarina... later, my stomach obliged yet again. I have fond memories of walking through Greenwich Village in NYC with a cup of CSC's Cake Batter ice cream (it tastes EXACTLY like cake batter) with my Butterfinger mix-ins. Let's suffice it to say that my lack of regular access to a Cold Stone Creamery is the reason why I'm not 300 pounds. We decided on a sundae to share, but which one? We let the Janken gods decide our fate - Peter was rock, scissors, papering ...
Tamuning, Guam living2travel... oriented, but also very rural and rugged at the same time. I've enclosed a few photos from the hotel area in Tumon Bay, with the rocky point in the distance called Two Lovers Point. Legend has it two Chamarro lovers tied their hair together and jumped to their deaths to avoid separation. Ouch! I did not see any of the infamous Brown Tree snakes which have decimated the bird population on Guam. "Some forested areas of the ...
Hagatna, Guam kristenh99... with beers or mixed drinks and delicious appetizers in hand, you could tell we were tired and a little bit on edge still, since everyone in the room is still an officer, and now cannot be identified by collar or sleeve insignia. The admiral who is embarked on our ship was there, adding to the nervousness. I happily chowed down and had a couple drinks, talking to some friends of mine, and to my surprise, won a Hilton shirt and hat (later stolen by the Industrial Hygiene ...
