Lesotho

The last couple weeks have picked up on the school work side of things because our academic portion of the semester is done next week. I had a midterm last week and had to conduct a teaching seminar that lasted an hour and a half. Last Thursday my Human Growth and Development class (Britini, Drea, Mellisa, Sam & myself) got to go to the country of Lesotho, which is entirely surrounded by South Africa but it is a sovereign nation. Lesotho is located in the Drakensburg mountains. W...

Drakensberg and the mountain country of Lesotho

Checked in to Sani Lodge, run by Russel and his wife. Beautifully lcated at the bottom of Sani Pass and surrounded by Drakensberg. The Drakensberg (Afrikaans for "Dragons Mountain") mountains are the highest in Southern Africa, rising up at Thabana Ntlenyana to 3498m. The place is all good, with the only exception of the food. The worst dinner I have had on any backpackers, which is sad when everything else is so nice. And for R50! The outside shower being one of the highlights! Imagine takin...

Durban, Sani Pass and then back to Jo'burg

... They also had cut out concrete holes in the middle of the floor which acted as their stoves where they would cook their meals – here Marissa had just cooked some bread and it was still warm, it tasted so good! Back outside Murray also showed us the different coloured flags the different houses show outside them – I remember 'red' meant they had meat available. Because there were few cows up on the hills and of their sheer location, when they decided to ...

Wales, waves wine and wonders

Since our last posting we have travelled many miles, and traversed some diverse scenery, from Cape Town and the winelands in the west to the mountains and gameparks of Kwazulu-Natal in the east, via the coastal scenery of the Garden Route. We reluctantly left our lovely Camps Bay accommodation and headed east, via the Vergelegen winery where we stopped off for a little tasting amid the colonial Dutch architecture set in majestic sweeping grounds full of giant camphor trees ...

Sani Pass

Day trip up the Sani Pass into Lesotho--back door of the country. Beer at highest pub in Africa. Cold, desolate. Tasted local bread, beer. Saw Cape vulture and brown-backed vulture, Kingfisher. Left suncream, rain jacket, sun hat, * our dinner in the hostel. Marathon night-drive to Johannesburg to stay at Molote's. Arrived 1am after getting lost &gt;1 hour. Nervous drive thorugh Joburg, safety in petrol stations/ info from maps. Bad directions/unprepared.<br>

More Adventures with Red Rover

When we last wrote we were heading into Swaziland, we ended up spending 5 nights in this beautiful, unique country. The highlight was an afternoon spent at a cultural village, learning about their way of life and beliefs, culminating in a traditional dance show. The kids also went swimming at the nearby waterfalls. Swaziland still has a monarchy, the current King Mswati 111 has 14 wives and his father before him had 120 wives and over 600 ...

Jack of the Bushveld

... shown below. On the way back, Jack ignored our rule about not killing plants and pulled a tumourous-looking purple tuber out of the ground. He stuck his hands into the fetid muck inside and refused to throw it away...until his hands began to burn and turn red. We washed his hands in the river, but it did not help. Within minutes, he was reduced to a wailing, itching mess, with tears and snot mingling on his face. It was a solid half hour's walk back to ...

Sani Pass and the Drakensburg Mountains

After spending a night in Durban I headed off to the Drakensburg Mountaintains, which would be my gateway to the mountainous country of Lesotho. Lesotho is a country that is completely surrounded by South Africa an is considered the highest country in the world since it is the only country where the elevation is over 1000 meters at every point. To get to Lesotho I had to tag ...

Mr Health??!!

... everyone, Then all of a sudden my leg just completely turns to jelly and a quality stack was shown to anyone in sight. The night was spent mainly in the bar playing pool and getting absolutely smashed, watching a comet fly across the star peppered sky and lying in a hammock drunkenly chatting till 3 in the morning. Paying for it today mind as have now arrived back in Durban after hungover bus journey. Then heading south tomorrow to ...

Mountains galore in Lesotho

Whilst working in South Africa I went to Lesotho twice, the first time was in 2006 and the second was in 2007. The first time I went to Lesotho I went to Masseru which is the capital of the country on the west side of the country. To get to Lesotho I had to get a coach from Joburg and stay overnight in Bloemfontein. When I arrived in Bloem there was no where for me to stay so I got friendly with the guy working for the bus company ...
