Animal Sancturies in Nairobi

... can take 5 to 10 years for them to be taken in by a family and all this time they are taken out into the park with the carers and introduced to families of wild elephants until they are finally accepted.

We watched them all being fed a special formula milk by bottle and they then rolled and splashed around in their mud pool often climbing all over each other. All very cute.

The centre also has 3 black rhinos that they’ve raised, two of which were available ...

Goodbyes

... one kid, it will help out their whole family.

So… here is where we are now. I have decided I am going to sponsor the little girl I have fallen in love with. Her name is Wythera (not sure about spelling), and she is an orphan. Margaret said $50 a month is enough, and that would change a kid’s life. She also said she would email us updates and pictures as often as we wanted, to let us know our money is actually making a difference. Den thinks she is going to ...

Conquering Fears: The Masai Market

... outdoor market... a lot of the same things sprawled out on blankets, people hassling you, etc. Some guy wanted me to trade my jacket for a coaster. Noppers. Overall, the visit to the market was a success, and Frank managed not to completely destroy our time with his fellow Masais. Some souvenirs were bought, and we got to get out of the house for an entire day which was nice!

Last night we got home and ate dinner with ...

Muzungu in town!

... a problem here! The tap outside my house where I am staying where I wash my clothes by hand is becoming somewhat of a luxury in my eyes........

I was starting to feel very down....one of my major concerns about doing volunteer work was being completely useless..........and I was feeling very useless! The magnitude of the poverty filled me with sadness and yet I was here but not helping anyone......the whole point of my coming here seemed to be failing miserably! I spoke to ...

Into Africa

... trekking through wonderfully changable landscape; from rainforest to bamboo, to giant heather, to funny trees which look like huge pineapples on sticks, to rocks, to glaciers...

The most challenging day, predictably, was the day of the summit. Having taken the whole day to acclaimatise the day before, we awoke at 3.30am to start the ascent.
Wearing at least 6 layers, we braced the cold and set out into the night; black shadows rising up around us and stars ...

KENYA AND UGANDA: THE GREAT MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

... though many had western adornments such as sandals and watches and some children ran around with ripped and dirty western t-shirts on. Immediate pleas for clothes and shoes to trade revealed the source of these items. The visit was very interesting. They demonstrated their songs and dances, showed us how to make fire by rubbing two sticks together, and showed us inside their small dark huts. We were privileged to be able to see a traditional Masai ...

Beads for my sponsor

... so may similar rides, but this was part and parcel of our work. Most of our children sponsored by the Matanya's Hope program live in remote areas of Kenya. They are far from pristine hospitals, cities and development as we know it in the Western world. But they are home - in their homes... and there is definitely something to be said for having little materialistically.

We picked Juliet's aunt Elizabeth up from ...

Day 1: July 29th 2009

... was new to me. After showering, we all said goodnight and I went to bed at about 10:30 pm and immediately fell asleep I was so jetlagged!! I am so thankful to have arrived safely in Kenya and to be welcomed by the Mugo family into their home! I am looking forward to a great two weeks with them and getting accustomed to the culture. I also am so excited to learn how Matanya's Hope is run and to meet all of the amazing, bright children in need of sponsors and supplies.
