Developments on the excitement front at ...

Developments on the excitement front at last!!! A change in the weather in the last week has brought with it an increase in drinking! We have a few new housemates and it is only proper to welcome them in style with a nice roast dinner, yes?? well we went one better and decided, while on a night out (in the Sportsbar, for those of you who know Cairns) that we would develope the Roast dinner party into a very refined and grown up gathering of mature adults and hold a "Toga Party" It came at the...

Ahhh relaxation

What do you do when you are hiking alone in the rainforest and suddenly you see a large tukey looking animal with a body of an ostrich that stands 6 ft tall(aka a cassowary) that you have been warned is unpredictable and will come after you with both feet with toenails that can disembowl you? a)run b)scream c)stand calmly : well I didn't exactly run, but turned around (something you are not supposed to do) and walked very fast away. Welcome to Mission Beach! While traveling up the east coast,...

Mission Beach

On our drive to mission beach we drove through the natiional park to Attie creek and took a swim in a creek that also had a waterfall called Murray falls. When we arrive in Mission Beach we booked ourseleves into the Sanctuary which was a haven in the rainforest and stayed in a cabin it was very secluded and peacefull. The next day a had my first hangover!! a nice swim ion the pool soon sorted that out though!!! I then went on a evening cuise of the Hill river Croc spotting!!! The mangroves a...

Brisbane to Cairns

The next stage of our journey for me meant picking up driving the East Coast of Australia, almost where I left off in 2004, when Ruth and I hired a car and headed from Sydney to Noosa. On that trip we saw many of Austalia's big things (prawn, banana, pineapple, oh and a fake Ayers Rock), but were unlucky with some of the natural wonders of this part of the world; in one instance taking a perhaps ill advised drive, hindsight being 20:20, to a high altitude rainforest lookout in dense mist. Thi...

Sanctuary

31 March 2009 So - let's have a quick synopsis of month one - I've climbed on Mt Fuji, bathed in the beaches of Bali, watched over the Hong Kong night skyline, sailed down croc infested waters, swam at the bottom of the ocean with sharks and so much more - and well - the highlight of the trip so far has just occured. I've moved on to Mission Beach - a couple of hours south of bustly, chaotic and lifeless Cairns. Mission beach itself is a little tourist trap as well - with a cluster of shops a...

Townsville to Tully To Mission Beach

Having made the call to now leave Townsville a day early and head north we had to pick a stop off point for the night ….Another search though the tourist papers and the like and we spotted a place called sanctuary retreat….at mission beach. It looked great. The only caveat when Jill booked it was that we should try and arrive before dark.

So off we went ..It wouldn’t be a hard dri...

Mission Beach

Spent one night in Mission beach. Myself and Fox stayed the night in a place called the sanctuary, in the middle of the rainforest. It took us a gruelling 15 minute walk through the rainforest to get ot the place, up in the hills, totally isolated. We basically stayed in a big mosquito net high up in the rainforest, above the trees and foilage. Weird animal noises were to be heard all night. On a few occasions a giant gecko (lizard), stick insect or beetle would land on me. Had a savage dinne...

Sleeping in the not so sleepy rain forest!

Mission beach is famous for having rain forest meet the white sandy beach. It's a tiny place of total beauty and don't expect phone signal! We decided to stay in a rain forest retreat. They had lovely cabins (which Nuala had). It had a little bathroom which was nothing special but the shower had floor to ceiling glass and a panoramic view of the rain forest. Me and Conor stayed in a hut which was a solid frame covered in bug net. All the huts were off the forest floor but we were totally out ...

Seeking Sanctuary

Just when I thought I was getting used to the backpacker lifestyle I arrive at the Sanctuary. http://www.sanctuaryatmission.com/ I arrived in Mission beach yesterday and everyone else got on one of the shuttles to the various backpackers in town. I, on the other hand, had booked into the Sanctuary having read about it in the Rough Guide (number 27 of 44 things to do in Australia) and I don't regret not going with the crowd. I'm staying in a mesh hut in the rainforest, however here at the sanc...

You wouldn't belive what I bumped into today......

Hello from Cairns! Thought we would give all of you avid readers (Mum,Dad and Sue at least!) an update on what Clare and I have been up to before we fly into the middle of Australia to see Uluru (or Ayers Rock as we traditionally have known it!) tomorrow. Magnetic Island So after our Whitsunday's trip, we decided that we needed a few days of rest and relaxation (and to try and save some money!). After a few hours heading north on the Greyhound, we pulled into Townsville where we jumped on the...

Adelaide to Dunk Island

... Its all really rather a sick joke. I can imagine the scene and conversation when creating the world, ‘Let’s tease these humans and put sublime coastline, hot temperatures, appealing looking water and then here’s the catch. Let’s dump some of the most dangerous things in the world in and see what happens'.
So all one can really do, is stand on the beach look on without in dismay at what they are missing. and not truly imagining the ...
