... the trail around the lake and the path to the shrine. A large Torii gate sat in the water and we walked through several more on our way up to the shrine. The shrine was lovely, but I think we are starting to believe that most are very similar. I learned on an ITT tour that there are 80,000 shrines in Japan, so this feeling is understandable. We ambled back to the main street playing tag with Will along the way. We found a tempura and soba (noodles) restaurant and enjoyed ...

... consisting of a number of small varied dishes. And varied they are. At one point Mary's cousin exclaims "well, I think there is something edible in there." There are beautiful pieces of sashimi, plenty of rice, pickled vegetables, miso soup, white wallpaper paste and something that looked like a cross between a chestnut and a mushroom. Some fish jelly thing. And other things I can not even identify. I'm a fairly adventurous eater, but ...

... way station and once back in town we scrambled to sort out a plan B. It was going to take too long to get back to the lake with any light left so we hopped on a bus and went to the base of another mountain to see the silver grass in bloom. Fall is apparently the best time to see the grass which is about 6-7 feet high and has a silver colour to it. We got there a bit too late for pictures in good light but the sunset reflecting off the clouds made for some pretty cool ...

... look right so I went back down all the steps and took the train back to where I started.
After a quick lunch eating the "famous" local noddles called Yoshida Udon (which comes with more veggies than usual and is said to be hardier), I decided to chase the elusive mountain reflection. I went to check out another of the "5 lakes" so I took a bus to Lake Shojiko, the smallest and least developed of the 5 lakes (three of them were once ...

... girls go to the shrine to receive a blessing and then boys go again at age 5 and girls at age 7. They were rather cute! From there we went on to the Japanese art gallery which had magnificent views of Lake Ashi and Mt Fuji. Next step was the trip across the lake in a pirate ship - Jonny Depp could have been on board. From there it was back down to our accommodation. This is quite an experience. It's a large hotel and shoes are removed at the front door and put into lockers. Many ...
