Population 442......

Check out at 11 and set off for San Simeon, Rich's choice for tonight's
stop half way down the coast. Lots more waves and coastal things along
the drive, probably the least exciting part of the pacific highway.
Near San Simeon we find somewhere with lots and lots of MASSIVE
elephant seals, mainly sleeping on the shore making Rich-like noises
and a few fighting in the sea. We find our motel, having driven past a
sign telling us San Simeon has a population of 442... Pretty muc...

Historical Traveler Reviews of San Simeon Lodge

Great price, comfortable room.

from watergurl
Great hotel for the price. We had two rooms and found them both clean and comfortable. The little patio was great. I would recommend this hotel and would return. It was a great value.

Nice area...............ok motel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The location is wonderful. Beautiful area. The motel was ok. Our room had a very uncomfortable bed, the shower was dark and dreary, walls in the bathroom were falling off, was not very clean. I asked them to change our sheets and they thought I wouldn't notice they didn't change them and turned the pillows over.

The resturant is over-priced.

We will go back but I wish they would improve the place.

Amazing weekend

from MV5000
We met 4 other families there at the San Simeon Lodge for the weekend. The food (breakfast) in the bar & grill is just as good or better then your "Denny's, Nations, or Perkos". The prices are beyond reasonable. The beach is right across the street. The bon fire pits are just fantastic for a large group to keep worm on a cold winter night. The intertainment in the Lodge on Saturday night was excelent. It is a great place to meet friends at from all over the state/country and just injoy the coast. So close to Hearst Castle (toured 1, 2 & 3) and toured the "white rocks" light house. It is so close to the board walk of Cambria featured in a documentory about elaphant seals. We walked that with the full moon on Feb 7th. We had a weekend full of Kodak moments that we used up 5-8 rolls of film per family... This will become one of the things we do every year. Just one draw back in the whole area (no menudo) for the weekend hangover. All of us enjoyed the stay & we are looking forward to next time. Off season is the best time to stay.

Not Bad for the Price

I recently stayed at the San Simeon Lodge. Hey, you can't beat the price. Maybe I was expecting too much, but the closest hotel to Hearst Castle translates to 3 miles away -- and don't expect much from your ocean view and balcony. I upgraded to a king room with an ocean view and balcony -- I'm sure that perhaps on a clear day you can see the ocean -- it was foggy. And. . . if you don't mind sharing, I guess you can call the walkway to your room a balcony. Hey, it served the purpose -- it's clean, its location provided a good stopping point and let's not forget that reasonable price. Sure, I'd stay there again.

IT Fit Our Needs"

from mastertonlaw
We selected this hotel in part because its internet promotions stated that it was the nearest hotel to the Hearst Castle. We found that, while this is technically true, there are no hotels within 3 miles of the castle, then suddenly there is this little development with at least 10 hotels all clumped together, any one of which would serve well in terms of proximity to the area's primary attraction. That said, however, we were satisfied with the hotel for the price we paid--$77 per night got us a clean, spacious second floor room, from which we could see the Pacific Ocean across Highway 1. We were adjacent to a little convenience store, which was nice as we could buy fruit, wine etc. and avoid some of the overpriced retsaurants in the area. We ate dinner one night in the hotel's restaurant, which was ok. The room was clean, but of course you get what you pay for-plastic cups, thin towels--I am not complaining, just informing. We found it a very convenient, appropriate base to see the castle, go for walks on the beach, etc. and no doubt it will serve well for others.

Great Value

Spring for the best room at this underpriced hotel! You will not be disappointed. It was very pleasant, quiet and clean. Just a couple of minor strikes against them: No free breakfast, no A/C, and no early check-in. I arrived in town at 11 a.m., and although the hotel was virtually vacant, they refused to let me check in until 3 p.m. Still the clean blue and white harbor exterior was very welcoming. On the grounds outside is a small pool, basketball half-court, volleyball net, arcade and pool tables. The A/C is hardly necessary considering the awesome ocean breezes that wafted into my room all night. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. Attached to the hotel is the Surf Bar and Grill, which serves all meals, cocktails beginning at 4 p.m., and hosts karaoke twice a week.

It's True, I Really Like This Place!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Base on the other three positive reviews, my wife and I stayed here last weekend. It was a very nice hotel for only $45 for a Queen room with pool view. Clean, comfortable bed, nice people at the desk, big room, nice liquor store across the parking lot. I would definately stay here again. January 16, 2003

I've stayed there a few times!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've stayed there a quite a few times, I meet my old roommate from San Francisco there. It's half way from Los Angeles and San Francisco...

Its a basic motel no special perks, really. It's cheap. Cheaper if you call, actually! It's close enough to the wineries and the beach is great at night. They have a few fireplaces out there, bring your own wood though. I like it, it's cheap and a nice cheap getaway!

San Simeon Lodge

Roughly about half way between LA and San Francisco on highway 1, which is the reason we stayed there. Motel style accommodation, which was fine and affordable, especially if travelling on a budget. There's not a lot at San Simeon itself, except Hearst Castle, which we didn't visit. The beach is not great either, but it is a convenient and affordable place to stay half way between the 2 cities.

Good for the price

from A TripAdvisor Member
It wasn't the best hotel I have ever stayed in but it was convenient and affordable. I would recommend this hotel for people traveling on a budget.
