... that came from Portugal in the 1780's. As usual we are amazed at how much was spent on the church, that is until we did manage to get into the correct church. Here everything you can see is covered in gold leaf and it is almost overpowering. The one interesting thing is that the carvings were made mainly by African slaves and they got their own back by slightly changing some of the figures and so there are a few very noticeably, if you look, pregnant angels!

Carneval i Salvador

Neste ...

Trials and Tribulations

... Pelo. Don´t get me wrong Pelo is cool for the dance classes and the cultural organisations and associations - I mean yesterday we saw the men lining up for the Filhos de Gandhi elections, right near our pousada and that was cool - but downtown is cooler!. Its fresh and dangerous and real and the beauty salons there are amazing. We got pedicures and I got a massage too and seriously they get in there, they are so strong, unlike anythign I´ve ever had so strong, yet ...

Homestay, classes and live in Salvador

... to understand why traditional birth attendants are so underutilized, and perhaps to find a way to improve access to natural birthing practices. I still need to refine my hypothesis, but so far that's the rough outline. Everyday here is such a gem, and probably the reason I haven't written in a while is that I just can't make myself sit inside, in front of a computer when there is just so much going on all around me!! Até mais- beijos!

I was so scared that i would have slept through my flight at the terminal because the clocks within the rio airport are not right. one clock was an hour off. anyways, luckily the lady started yelling in portugese for the flights and my brain had a half a brain cell to say, "Get your ass up!!". I made it! Upon arrival to Salvador, i was still drunk and ...

... hand. We were picked up and were so happy to see that we were the only tourist going!!! The drive out to the terreiro was a bit sketchy and i was happy we were with a guide. We arrived at the house where Mo told me that god of the house was called Ogun, which is represented by the color green. I was very nervous and excited to see this but when we arrived we were told we would have to wait about an hour and a half before it actually started ...

First Half of Brazil

February 6, 2008 Salvador, Brazil Dear All, To begin... THE GIANTS WON THE SUPERBOWL!!! I cannot believe that I wasn't home for it, but the way I experienced it was still pretty amazing. We tried everything we could to get the game broadcast on the TVs on the ship but the Executive Dean gave us the run around and is not my favorite person to say the least. The ship has limited bandwidth, so the internet is really slow when a lot of people are on it. Will, 3 other kids ...
