... along the 'fondamente' we found the right stop and were taken "across the road" to the small island of S. Giorgio Maggiore. The church has a tall bell tower (campanile) with a lift!! It cost €6 but the views from the top were amazing. We could see across to the mainland with the mountains in the background and then across Lido to the sea and all the small islands of Venice. The best thing was that there were no queues and at one ...

The hotel clearly tried to cater to folks of all nationalities, especially Americans, and so they had things like scrambled eggs and sausages. The second was of Auschwitz 2, better known as Birkenau, the extermination camp - the camp where when it was in full swing ensured the majority of arrivals were gassed within one hour of arrival. After the two tours were over, Gaby and I returned to both camps to go through them quietly and reflectively by ourselves, overall spending eight hours in Auschwitz. We were particularly engaged with Birkenau. We traced every possible footstep, comparing locations ...

    Argostoli, Kefalonia, Greece

Woke up in Greece again. The port is right in town so we had not booked a ship tour. Instead, walked into town, bought some clothes and some Baklava, visited the Fruit and Vegetable Market and booked a local tour. Argostoli, as well as most of the island, was bombed in World War II and they experienced massive destruction from an earthquake in 1953. So, the majority of the buildings ...
