In the beginning......

... Mexican Basil Fawlty. And yes I am going to be called Lucy for the next few months as no one in Central America seems to be able to say Lizzy. I asked him for a non smoking room, and he said of course, no problem. The first things I saw when I went into the room were two massive ashtrays, one either side of the bed, and a cigarette burn in the blanket. I had a shower, accidentally swallowed some water, and lay awake waiting for amoebic dysentry to kick in.

I had three free days ...

la capitale

... orrore.

let's take the toll roads...because this is faster

Happy Christmas!

... their stories. This tradition has been going on for years and we felt very privileged to be part of this local, ancient custom. That was until we stopped at a bar on the way, only to see the other groups of musicians and their followers pass by at 10 minute intervals... not so special after all... pesky tourists! We also stumbled across a parade for the Day of the Revolution just before we went to get our bus back to D.F. the next day which was so lucky and well worth watching ...

MacGyver en Mexico

... an elderly man to perform an involuntary grind right up against our most unfortunate character. For the next five or so minutes, MacGyver felt every rasping breath of that elderly man down the back of his neck. This was the kind of intimacy they don't write about in guidebooks. Xochilmilco certainly had an authentic urban Mexican feel about it. It seemed like a completely different world, its grit and grime in both its ...

Nesting

... I have left on my "must see/do" list are huge and overwhelming. I'd like to go to the legendary anthropology museum, for example (It´s massive and can take days to fully explore. I've heard stories about people getting lost inside), and go to Teotihuacan to climb a great, big Aztec pyramid, but I just haven't been up for those adventures. -There aren't many people left in the hostel dorm anymore, so it´s been hard to find ...

First impressions

... next flight. I asked where was the best place to buy bus tickets. I wasted some time in town, the centre is really beautiful, full of old churches, large squares and rows of colonial style buildings. I then took the metro to the bus station, bought scant supplies for the coach journey because I was now use to the free food and restaurant stops that always occur leaving me with loads of food I didn't eat. Then boarded the 20 hour bus to Merida.

Paradise Lost....

... through the meal while sipping our Tecates...they were cold and that was good. We learned many valuable lessons today...first and foremost...an army marches on it's stomach...so from now on, we were getting lunch on the road before entering town, so we'd have a chance to cool down, eat a nice meal, and not be so hot, hungry, and exasperated while searching for a place to stay for the evening. Secondly - no more industrial towns...the smaller the town, the ...

First contact, rest, poor air index

... the streets I had no idea what to make of the streetscape. I had expected the meaning of things I saw to be more apparent, but the facades were not only called names I could not understand, but I could not work out which buildings were for what from the vehical as it sped past. My first impression was of chaos. Hotel Jena was more luxurious than I expected. An imposing tower. The room was small. All I ...

Mexico City: a new camera and faits divers

... we sleep badly because of the noise. We are in the center of the city and the delivery to the shops happens ... at night, with zero respect for people who want to sleep. There is screaming and shouting and tossing and loud music. But: worse of all: the traffic police. Two police (wo)men stand at every corner of Mexico City, traffic lights or not. They have a whistle in their mouth 24/7 and are using it 24/7. To start with, they use it for ...
