We drove about 40 kilometres and crossed from Croatia into Slovenia, then 70 kilometres and into Italy and the autostrada where I might have gone as fast as 140 or 150, but that was slow compared to other drivers on the road. The autostrada took us from Trieste to Verona and south to Bologna and southeast toward Ravenna and within 30 kilometres of San Marino.

... selection of the surviving mosaics were depicting the siege of Constantinople (which led to its fall in 1204)! Okay, maybe no one else (including Ben) feels that warrants the exclamation mark, but this medievalist does! After that, our stops were one amazing set of mosaics after another, along with a fine selection of altar panels, pottery shards, Egyptian death masks, and early modern armor in the museum.

All in all, Ravenna was a win.

With only one day in San Marino I got an early start after breakfast but unfortunately, the fog is in. I was hoping for a great day with fantastic views from the centre of the town on top of the mountain but not to be. I don the jacket and scale and head for the fort. Spending 4 hours walking up and down little streets and in to towers. Up many stairs. I call it quotes at a cafe for a late lunch and put up one slightly sore ...
