Our bags packed and an early morning start to Perugia! We drove about 3 hours during which time our guide described some things and also a small lesson for some Italian words! We arrived in Assisi just as it began to sprinkle!! We walked through this walled city until we came to the Church of St Francis! We went in for a tour, saw the crypt and …

So, my first day in Gex. Absolutely lovely. At night I got to spend time with my wonderful cousin Claudia and her adorable son Leo, and during the day I was able to sleep in, drink tea, read on the porch, and take in the mountain air. A wonderful recovery from wild Berlin and the nightmare commute over.

By the second day I already found myself getting too comfortable and homesick. I wasn't doing much, so I had a lot of time to talk to people from back ...

how the Il Palio, the horse race between competing districts is conducted. It looks like a spectacular event but to get seats you have to pay a fortune or stand in the middle for up to four hours before the race starts. The Piazza is a spectacular sloping affair with buildings
all around, restaurants and people lounging and laying on ...

... in it). Next to the Palazzo is the Uffizi Gallery which is the oldest and most famous art museum. We didn’t get a chance to go in but did walk through its courtyard which has sculptures of all the famous artists and scholars such as Galileo and Donatello.

We walked along the Arno River to the famous Ponte Vecchio which is the only original bridge left after World War 2 because Hitler took a liking to it. It originally had fish markets along ...

First days of classes! So far they are pretty interesting and also easy, just my type! Italian is "un joke", but it is nice to practice as I have been using it more and more! Not always successfully, but I know more than anyone here (shhhh), so I have to help everyone out. I am also taking Politics of the European Union, which looks really interesting and the professor sounds great. It is, however, three hours long so expect many emails during that time!

However, you will ...

    Good place to stay!!

    from

This place is a little bit far from the main train station but once we got there, it was worth it. The rooms were what we expected from a 4star hotel. We really enjoyed the friendly staff and the buffet breakfast that was served. We would stay here again.

    What a value!

    from

We stayed at the San Gallo Palace just last week for 4 nights days. We booked a superior room. The hotel used to be a private house and has been renovated last year!!The rooms are not large, but you will find all the comfort you need. The bathrooms are not very large either, but the attention to details is excellent. Each room has a small flat panel TV with integrated internet access. The staff is fast and very freindly and help you anyway they can.The hotel is located about 10 min walk from the Duomo.I would suggest the San Gallo Palace to anybody travelling to Florence. Great pick for the value!!

    Excellent Value!

    from

We stayed at the San Gallo for seven nights in late September. Florence is a city we visit for business and pleasure several times each and we have stayed in many hotels, always hoping to find one we could adopt as our "regular" home away from home.

    Fabulous Hotel

    from

Wow, this hotel was great! It is new and very clean. Our room was small but had all the modern conveniences. The hotel is sort of on the edge of Florence but within a 10-15 minute walk of most attractions. We walked at night and felt perfectly safe. This hotel was by far the best value for our money in all of Italy. We highly recommend this hotel to others.

    Fantastic !

    from

We have 4 nights at San Gallo Palace on august 2004. San Gallo is a perfect hotel, beautiful design, very good service. Rooms are very confortable and had all necessary equipements (internet, satellite TV, mini bar, ....). The satff is very helpful and professionnal.

The Breakfast is the best breakfast we had in italy (fresh fuit juce, fruits, all sorts of bread, very high quality products).

The price regading quality is excellent .

The only little problem is that the hotel is 15 minutes walking to the heart of Florence ! but one of the most pleasures of Florence is Walking ; and if we don't like walking, ther is a stop bus near the hotel.

I highly recommand this hotel !
