... open sewage canals and there is a sizable cow population (it feels like a barn that’s never been cleaned). We saw a funeral procession with a wrapped-up body on a stretcher being carried to where they will burn it and put the ashes into the lake (yes, the lake where the children were splashing around). That was interesting.

... to Ana Sagar which has two parks by its edge and various marble pavilions. Initially it looked quite beautiful with clear blue sky, green waters and the pretty trees, one of which was full of huge fruit bats which was amazing to see. However, when we looked over the wall into the lake, there was rubbish everywhere and animals eating it! Further round the poor people were bathing and washing in the lake, quite a contrast from the park. ...

... I was enthralled by the chaos and the beauty. This country makes a delightful and sometimes overwhelming assault on the senses. I arrived in the morning and took an auto rickshaw to a suburb of Mumbai where I couchsurfed at the home of two American girls (www.couchsurfing.org, if you’re not familiar) who were hosting several other female travelers. I quickly made friends with one, a British woman named Victoria.
