... to turn to my likely arrival date in Rome. If I keep to the daily distances in one guide, then I could arrive on the weekend of 23/24 August. If I decide to slow down and take a rest day or two in some of the more historic cities along the way - eg., Siena, Lucca, etc - then it could be closer to the full three months I'd originally estimated. I'll let you know when I know.

Before closing, I have to say I don't know when I'll next blog. Staying in parish accommodation ...

... for now I'll say simply that I am well, I'm making good progess and tonight I am sleeping with four other pilgrims - including a very special one - in parish accommodation in Medesano, not far out of the city of Fidenza.

We enjoyed a gloriously scenic drive from Lake Geneva through the mountains into Italy. Our arrival was dampered only by the exorbitant toll to get through the St. Bernard pass. Sean can provide you the lengthy historical importance of this pass one day but all you really need to know is that it is the most ancient pass of the western alps with traces of the roman road, Napoleon used it to enter Italy, and it costs 31 CHF to travel 3.5 miles ...
