... an appointment. We decided to wait a bit until most of the people were inside and then take our chance to apply without an appointment. We were waiting for 2,5 hours outside and when we finally went in the lady didn't even ask if we had an appointment. She was quite rude but everything went smooth. She told us to try to call next Monday to ask about the visa. The other guy put "urgent" on his application and asked when he could call but the lady just said it doesn't ...

... the next big town, or better yet, all the way to Biskek. Dave put his hand up at the first car driving down the highway. It was a private car and the driver swerved to the shoulder and stopped. Immediately, a taxi arrived and stopped behind him. The guy in the first car stepped out and wrote "2000 som" in the dirt. We mimed "no thank you, that is too much" and countered "400 som per person" (generous, but the going rate for foreigners, we guessed). ...

... Kyrgyzstan. There's a distinct difference in the people and culture between the north and south, the south being more Uzbek and thus having a much more Arabic feel about it. The dress is more conservative, people look different (less 'East Asian' and more Middle Eastern), the language is Uzbek and the street chaos is like that of an Arabic country. Arslanbob was one of the highlights of our time in the country. It's a large village located, yes you guessed it, in the shadow ...
