The guide book highly recommended the resort of Air Batang to base yourself in so we ...

However, you don’t want to stay there, it’s just a marina, no beach. Around Tekek they have started to destroy the shore by paving stretch of road of a couple of kilometers with the intention to make an esplanade. The walk itself was hot and sticky, but not plagued with insects, and a disappointing lack of animals or birds. It was, however, all fairly green, with occasional glimpses of the ocean on one side and hills/rainforest on the other. Reaching Genting, again we were ...

... we notced someone atop one of the coconut trees. It transpired that this was a regular occurance, as the coconuts had to be harvested in order to prevent them falling onto the heads of residents. We were offered not one, but four, fresh fruits, and following deft machete work, got stuck into drinking the cool milk and eating the freshest of flesh. The texture was much more ...

On this crossing, passengers were not allowed outside, which gives some idea of the conditions –I thought it was ok, if a little bumpy, Sara thought it was horrendous. Our seat partner was a Kiwi, sharing enthusiastically in our cricket performance against Australia. He was obviously an extremely wealty man, with strings of show-jumping horses, and first-hand knowledge ...
