"Salad Beach Resort"

From the pier a 1 hour "fast ferry" to our next stop moving south, the island of Koh Pha-Ngan. Found a great resort from the people at the pier and took a taxi to "Salad Beach Resort" at Haad Salad cove.

Paradise Found...

(Photos to follow) It is so tiring doing absolutely nothing....we've just had a wonderful 4 days on the lovely island of Koh Phangan doing bugger all. The island was just an hours ferry hop from Koh Samui but getting to the ferry turned in to a right 2 and 8!!! The security guards at our hotel on Chaweng Beach "manage" the ferry tickets. Bloody cowboys. We wanted to go at 10am and the price was advertised on this huge sign next to their command post (posh hut)- 180 baht each. The first spot o...

The Luxury That Baht Can Buy

After a short ferry ride in the sunshine we arrived on the island of Ko Phangan, famous for the all-night, full moon rave parties on Hat Rin beach (the # 1 party in the world so Bryan tells me). Unfortunately, to his great disappointment, we had just missed the last one and we would be in Vietnam when the next one came around. To compensate, we decided to stay on the beach where the party usually takes place as there were loads of budget accommodation to be found. However, when we arrived, wh...

Home for a bit

This is more like it! Phangan, only a few miles south of Koh Tao, is bigger, still quite developed but nowhere near as loud and expensive. We've decided to take up residence in Haad Salad, or Salad beach, high on the north west corner of the island. Phangan is known for its full moon party, where thousands of backpackers descend to par-tay. The island is big enough for us all to exist happily though and we've been very lucky in our resort. We're staying in a plush (and cheap!) resort on a pri...

Samantha - We had planned to stay at a bungalow resort that we had heard of, but it turned out to be a building site, so I looked down a the collection of leaflets that had been thrust into my hand at the ferry terminal and randomly picked a resort to stay at. It turned out to be a VERY good choice. We were paying next to nothing for a lovely hotel room with balcony, a swimming pool, lovely grounds and a restaurant set right on the beach. The resort was set on the most beautiful beach which w...

Ko Phangan, Thailand

After the shoddy accommodation we ended up in in Ko Tao, we decided when we were on the boat we were gonna try to get something really nice on Ko Phangan even if it meant spending twice our usual amount. Erin & Doug were still with us too and they were thinking the same (I think Erin was traumatised at having to manually flush the toilets in Ko Tao!). So when we got off the boat were were greeted by the usual array of aggressive touts and taxi drivers. Eventually we got into a taxi and he...

Diving: DAY 3

... his colleagues, to drop his fare. Exasperated after futile bargaining, and unable to comprehend the driver's shunning of a financial opportunity, I shouted "What are you doing in there mate, sat there having a ****?!" Unfortunately, he understood me. I won't go into detail; luckily nothing bad happened, but suffice to say the outcome wasn't pleasant, Natalie was very upset and angry with me, and it ruined the end of the night. Alcohol, you are not my friend!

It's like swimming in an aquarium!

... in the body. Fine by me. I was pretty 50/50 about this whole scuba business anyways. They loved the dive. Jane and I spent the day living luxuriously -- slept in after breakfast, got a massage, had lunch, and then hit the beach. I went snorkelling that day off the beach and holy cow was there ever a lot to see among the corals there. I saw far more fish than I can remember and even counted 7 sea urchins and some clam-like things with purple lips ...

... so many things. We then finished and collected our certificates making us qualified scuba divers!!

We are now going to have some dinner, and a well deserved drink or three before staying in our hotel for the last night. This afternoon we booked ourselves into another cheaper hotel for two nights, and we're just about to book ourselves on a catamaran boat to take us to Koh Phangan, the island directly south of us, leaving on friday.
Paradise

... There were many details to look at that its almost too much. In the same complex was the Emerald Buddha. Its a buddha carved out of jade and was initially found in the 1400's before being brought to bangkok in the 1700's. Its housed in this large temple where worshipers still come daily, along with the trong of tourists.

Next we walked to Wat Pho, or the reclining Buddha. The highly impressive gold plated reclining Buddha is 46 meters long and 15 ...

Learning to Scuba Dive in Kho Tao

... on business....that was until Steve knelt on it! Unbeknown to our instructor Hanna - who then wrote on her magnetic board - "An Indian Walkman - very rare! Extremely poisonous!" Steve looking a little pale by this point tried to relay that he had knelt on it, however it transpires that although prickly, it fortunately didn't inject any poison! Phew! Learning to dive was fun and was helped by the fact that the sea water was a constant ...
