En sortant, nous nous approchons des grands filets de pêche disposés sur le front de mer. Les prises sont rares ce dimanche et les pêcheurs discutent avec les touristes de passage. So now we have arrived on the west coast, in the southern state of Kerala. I have been told this is the cleanest and most relaxed part of Indian. The guide book tells me that it also has the highest literacy rate in the country of around 90%, well about the national average. The first thing that struck me on the train as we approached Cochin was the houses, they are all painted with bright vibrant colours and the paint is not faded or peeling off like everywhere else ...

... the set of Slumdog Millionaire, a country in which you couldn't escape the poverty. However I was pleased to find that Fort Cochin, although busy, was easy, largely down to its tourist infastructure. Perhaps this wasn't necessarily the 'real India' and I'll encounter the hoards of beggars and shocking poverty in the larger cities. But as an introduction to India Cochin was perfect, even boarding on relaxing.
