    Tour de la Loire

We set off early from Beaune to start the drive to the Loire Valley. Our first stop was Chateau de Chambord. This huge palace was first built by Francis I, King of France at the time that Henry VIII was King of England. Ben noticed that the castle had a moat and inside a special winding staircase (a double helix). On the ceiling, Ben and Jon noticed a fire breathing lizard (a salamander which was the emblem of Francis) and big letter ...

... past and went into one of the cubicles. Sue was following me and I heard her ask if the toilets were open. On being told "Non!" she had to go about a hundred yards to search for the only other block on site. Other campers were also wandering round like there was a treasure hunt going on. Well i was warmer last night. I put extra insulation between me and the bed. Lovely morning. Went to Chambord Castle. It is a huge place with lots going on. We walked around the main building but didn't go inside. I don't think we would have appreciated it fully as the tour guides only spoke rapid French. The building is very beautiful and has a huge number of turrets. When you look at the castle, the turrets (although very ornate) are really random. You ...

... restored, but with very modern facilities. We have the attic room, with sloping ceilings, exposed beams, Sky light, dormer windows and a BATH !!!! We are in heaven. After another delicious lunch from the patisserie, we toured the beautiful chateau sitting at the entrance to town and surrounded by a substantial moat. The interior did not disappoint either. The craftsmanship is amazing, even more incredible when we discovered it was built in the 13 th ...

... centre of town, complete with a water play area for the littlies. The streets are beautifully wide, and the buildings very traditional, but very ornate. The shopping area is similar to Milan. John thinks this is almost the perfect holiday, as we really haven't done any shopping at all. We are pretty tired tonight, well I am, after our biggest day yet, 80 kms, but an early night, will have us fit and rearing to go tomorrow. The ...
