The hotel is in an amazing location across the road from the Jardin Tuileries. The rooms are comfortable and the staff are amazing. There is also a beautiful courtyard. I managed to get the hotel for a good deal, it would be very expensive if paying full price.

Pros and Cons
Spent 6 nights at the St. James 8/03 during the record heat wave and the room a/c was much appreciated, but please note hotel main areas were not. We spent a great deal of money at the Meurice Bar just for a/c. We received a free upgrade to a duplex suite (2 levels with 1.5 baths) and the room was spacious, but dull and shabby albeit clean. One night no water pressure and no shower and in several (more than 3) instances no hot water. Staff was attentive and nice, but beware of hot water issue if you stay here in winter. When Paris was 105F not a problem. Location is superb as previously noted in other reviews. If you need a large room, this is the hotel, but I will opt for Hyatt Madeleine or Melia Vendome next time.
Great Hotel and Location
My wife and I stayed here from the 30th of July to the 4th of August.
The hotel is located in a great location right next to the Lourve and across from a metro station on the Number one line of the Metro system.
We stayed in a superior room that was very large compared to a hotel that I had stayed at before in Paris. It was thoroughly cleaned every day during our stay and the strong A.C. was very welcome after long days exploring Paris on some of the hottest days of the year. The restaurant is currently being renovated they did however provide a very nice buffet style breakfast in one of the hotels downstairs conference rooms. This was included in our room price be sure to ask about it.
They did offer a limited food service through out the day but we did not use this. We ate a two of the small cafes that were on either side of the hotel most of the time both provided good food and portions for a reasonable price. The hotel staff was very helpful and assisted us with our daily sightseeing by telling us which Metros to take to various attractions. I highly recommend this hotel and will stay here every time I visit Paris.
Don't Even Think About It
This place is simply not a 4-star hotel, probably not even a 1-star hotel. It is a disgraceful dump. We reserved through Expedia, and I think because of this the hotel simply had no intention of giving us the "Superior" Room (larger size, with sitting area) that we had paid for. We looked at 4 rooms, each of which Quasimodo would have been ashamed to stay in. They were small, dark, dirty and worn-out. We demanded and did receive a full refund (and ended up staying at a gorgeous real 4-star hotel for only slightly more money).
We just returned from a 9 day stay (July 15-23) at the Hotel St. James et Albany, and we have definitely found the perfect Parisian hotel. First of all, it is in an unbeatable location on Rue du Rivoli--across the street from the Metro and the Tuileries, down the street from the Louvre and Palais Royale, across the Seine from the D'Orsay and the 5th and 6th, around the corner from Rue St. Honore and other shopping streets --we could go on and on about the location. Our beautifully appointed room was on the back courtyard and was extremely quiet, spacious, and clean. Besides the queen bed, which was really 2 twins made up as a queen, there was a large sitting area with couch, writing table and breakfast table, TV with internet capabilities, and phone. The large bathroom had a tub, vanity, and glass shower and all the usual complimentary toiletries. A fluffy terry robe was also available to us. The staff was very responsive/professional and addressed all our questions in a friendly manner. Our package did not include breakfast, but we did elect to purchase it twice. It is a buffet with various breads, eggs, meats, cheeses, fresh fruit salad, juices, coffee and tea. Everything tasted fresh. The hotel was undergoing renovations which will add a pool and fitness center. This will make the hotel even more perfect. We have stayed in Paris on three other occasions, and this was the nicest. If you want a classically managed hotel with a bit of history (Lafayette was married here and Marie Antoinette visited him here on his return to Paris from the American Revolution), the Hotel St. James et Albany might be your ideal residence in Paris.
Wonderful hotel in heart of Paris
Just returned from trip to Europe where we spent 3 nights at Clarion St. James & Albany (July 16-19, 2003). I also stayed at hotel in April for 3 days. We have stayed all over Europe, primarily in 4 star hotels.
This is the best 4 star hotel we have ever stayed. We reserved a standard room at a very reasonable rate. Both times we were upgraded to a superior. Both times, the rooms were wonderful -- large, wonderful oriental rug, extremely comfortable and attractive couch, desk and couple of chairs. The decor was lovely and tasteful. Both rooms overlooked a small courtyard and were very quiet. We had a bathroom and separate toilet room, about five closets, one of which was a walk-in.
The room was extremely clean and the service excellent. The best part of the hotel is its location, right across from the Tuilleries Gardens in the center of Paris. The subway entrance was directly across the street. I would never dream of staying anywhere else in Paris. -- Belinda Nichols, Woodlawn, Virginia.
We just returned from Paris 2 days ago. We stayed at the St James and Albany the last 3 days of our trip. I have to say that the rooms were the most filthy rooms I have ever seen. The carpets were so dirty we did not want to walk on them without shoes or when getting out of the shower. Speaking of the shower, it had mold all thru out the tiles, and a bonus piece of chewing gum stuck on the ceiling. It looked like the carpets were stained with dog urine. We complained and they showed us a room that was just as dirty. We were staying in a junior suite. Our air conditioning broke on the 2nd day. We notified the front desk but no one ever came to fix it. The urine smell was then stronger without the air conditioner working. This hotel spoiled our last 3 days in Paris.
My husband, daughter and I were not in the best of spirits with such a terrible room to come back to after being out all day. We complained when checking out and all they did was take 140 euros off the bill. The walls were so thin that when the people in the next room entered their room it sounded like they were coming in our room. Stay away from this hotel!
I was completely disappointed.
We recently stayed at the Clarion St James on the Rue du Rivoli. I had researched the Paris hotels for months looking for just the right one.
I had read the reviews on this site and was very impressed by what everyone had to say about the accommodations and facilities the St James had to offer. Unfortunately, the St James I stayed at was nothing like what I had read about. Our room was extremely small at the end of a hall where 1/2 the rooms were being rennovated. We were awakened each morning at 7 am to the sounds of motorized saws and hammering. When the workers were not hammering, they were painting causing the fumes to penetrate the rooms and hallways. Our room overlooked the preferred sidewalk grates for homeless people to spend the nights. Our room had twin beds which the staff did move together to make a king size bed but... each day it was a surprise as to whether the beds remained together or pulled apart as separate beds. When this happened, we would go down to the front desk and request that the bed be made up again, which the staff did do. We were under the impression that breakfast was included but were told that since we booked the room thru a "online discount hotel booking agent", it was not. Some days we would have glasses in the bathroom and then other days there weren't any. One evening we came back late from walking the city at midnight. We asked the front desk if bar was opened and we were told that the bar stays open until 1 am. We proceeded to order a coffee but were tld that they could not serve us because they had to count the bottles! Upon checking out, the hotel had charged our room with pay TV and 12 breakfasts ($21/meal)! Thank goodness we checked the bill before signing it.
Saying I was disappointed is to put it mildly. The rating of this hotel is 4 stars. I would hate to think what a 2 or 3 star hotel is like if the St James is suppose to represent an above average hotel.
Paris is a beautiful city but my suggetion is to stay anywhere BUT the St James.
Love this hotel
Stayed in July 2002. Excellent value in Paris. Very quiet, spacious & comfortable rooms. Spacious bathroom with shower and large tub (the WC was really small, but hey, what all do you need to do in there anyway?) The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location can't be beat-we walked to the Louvre, Notre Dame, Place de la Concorde, just to name a few spots. I would absolutely stay there again.
St. James & Albany good value
We stayed at the St. James & Albany, on rue Rivoli in the 1st arr. for five nights in early December, 2002, as part of an airline package. We were guaranteed a superior room (one up from standard) and were pleasantly surprised. On another trip we'd stayed in 2 and 3 star hotels, and while comfy, the rooms were expectedly small. This was a splurge for our 10th anniversay. The hotel has 4stars and is in a great location. Our room overlooked the Tuileries Gardens and had a partial view of the Musee D'Orsay accross the Seine. You can walk everywhere and strolling accross the Seine to the 5th & 6th arrs. is lovely.
It was actually two rooms. We entered a small hallway with a half bath and big closet (w/white terry bathrobe) and full length mirror. Then onto a smallish living area with a sofa, desk, tv, telephone & minibar. Then onto a medium sized room with a king bed (two twins w/king bedding), two more closets, another tv and another phone. Then onto a HUGE bathroom with a large new tub, separate glass shower, long sink space for two. All newly tiled and fresh. Really nice lighting, towels and toiletries. Everything was very clean. The only disappointment was the carpet was a tad dingy w/a few stains (clean, but stained). We could hardly complain.
The room included a breakfast buffet and we were not disappointed but we are not big breakfast eaters. They had great coffee (au lait for me) and the staff walked around with refills. Yummy, fresh croissants, pain, and pain au chocolat. There were cereals, hard boiled eggs, three kinds of juice and a few things I couldn't figure out. The hotel, at least while we were there, had a lot of young Japanese on tours and perhaps the hotel tries to accomodate many different nationalities. There was also bacon & sausage and perhaps some eggs. We stuck to the croissants, juice (really good grapefruit juice) and coffee.
The public areas were very nice -- painted murals, leather seating, marble or tile floors. In summer there's a beautiful courtyard (it was winter) in which to dine or have a drink. The bar was comfy but overpriced compared to other places. The staff was nice but not gushing. They made resevations for us and gave directions promptly.
Overall, I really liked this hotel and the price was great. It's not like the Ritz or Scribe, but then again you're not paying that price. They do have certain amenities one would expect like a doorman and such. The rooms were quiet at night and we loved relaxing in the living area after shopping. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Clarion St. James and Albany
This hotel was very conveniently located across the street from the Louvre. Also right next to the Metro, and close to stores and restaurants. We were pleasantly surprised by our accomodations. We had a very large room with 1 full bath, and another half bath (toilet and sink). All in all, thought the room was a very good value for its price, quality, and above all, location.
