On The Beach

Our first stop in Vietam is a small, fairly desolate beach town called Phan Thiet.

So we decided to take the overnight bus after all.... I say decided but it was more the case that for the next couple of days no "daytime" buses were going. We had already felt that we had stayed in Hoi An for long enough so we resigned ourselves to another 12 hour terror by night bus. Have to say that it was actually ok.... and thanks to my Virgin Airways bright yellow eye shades - we keep everything now!! - even managed to get some sleep (Lorna just sleeps as soon as it goes past 9pm). We a...

Mui Ne - the infamous sand dunes!

Leaving Saigon was an experience in iself! In Vietnam they have one (yes just one!) highway up the coast and with it being 'Tet' (New Year Holiday) in Vietnam, every bugger was on the road with us going home! Needless to say, like London we sat for about 2 hours not moving in a traffic jam and then once moving slowly, tried to tackle roundabouts with about 30 other buses, 40 mopeds, about 10bikes with kids on and a few old ladies walking....... my god, is all that came to mind, I am not sure...

... moving water buffalo; ponds so full of ducks that you could barely see the water, and of course the obligatory paddy fields. We had booked ahead using the internet and so the bus dropped us off near our hotel. After checking in we went into town to look for some food and ended up bumping in Henry (a Kiwi we had met in our hostel in HCMC). As he had been here a week doing some diving he gave us a few local tips on where to go and what to do.

... the cute boys out surfing all afternoon... what more could a girl ask for! Hmmm... maybe to be 20 years younger! Stephanie and I hung out in Mui Ne for 2 1/2 days and seriously, we did eat at the same restaurant almost every meal! It was so good and very reasonable. The funny part was that we kept running into the same people there all the time... they didn't call it Popular Restaurant for ...

One hour or two?

... traffic of Saigon. The rule here is that there are no rules. It kind of looks like it all works when you're on foot, motorbikes intermingle with cars, taxis and bicycles almost like they are dancing, but when you're in the thick of it somehow it doesn't feel that way. Might is right, is the motto, and pedestrians and bicycles are definitely at the bottom of the pile. Still, by the time we got here the traffic had thinned out considerably, and ...

... id given all my photos to brownie on his memory stick, and so i called him up and asked him to copy them onto ANOTHER memory stick and send it to hong kong, where ill be staying for a couple of weeks. It really was balls though, and i tried calling the tunnels office and asking if they could look for it and they couldnt find it and so it was all a massive inconvenience, as i didnt have time to go back and look myself, as our bus left pretty imminently. As a result ...

... interested. Although we did not rent the sand sleds, we spoke to other people later that tried it out and they found it was not as easy to use a sled in sand as it was in snow. However some of these sand dunes were so steep that I cannot imagine how they would not work and for 20,000 dong with some cold beer, I imagine it would make a fun afternoon. We were more interested in taking pictures though, and this place made one of the best backdrops of ...

... plantations, mountain villages and some steep, fast curvy downhill roads. It took us less than 2 hours to cover the first 50km and that included some uphill and stops, so when it was downhill we were really flying (even motorbikes couldn't keep up with us!). Mui Ne is a nice beach town and we spent our days relaxing (and giving our bottoms time to recover) and enjoying the ...

... and have a bit of a pamper. We went to a local 'beauty spa', I got a foot massage and manicure ( have been able to grow my nails now I'm not boxing). Teresa got the same but a pedicure and the others got an aftersun massage. We were there about 1.5hrs and it cost us all $10 each. The generator went out half way so we had our treatments by candle or lamp..sweet. As we hadn't eaten since breakfast we went out straight away and ...

DAY 23 - Friday October 26th: Bleary-eyed at 2am, the bus dropped us off at a beach cabin family-run guesthouse literally on the shoreline and away from the down-town resort strip of Mui N''e - rrrresult as cheap and friendly as! Nearly took over the whole place with our 4 cabins between the 9 of us like. all looked spiffingly well for the upcoming days weather wise yeeeeeeha! Eager to revel in our good fortunes (a risk given the average weather previously in the ...
