After grabbing an overnight train back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, we head to our Christmas destination of Koh Samed - a small island in the Gulf of Thailand. As with a lot of journeys in Thailand, it takes a lot longer than the stated bus time of 2-3 hours, with a good hour of chaos as they try to load the buses at Bangkok to different resort destinations and another hour driving around Bangkok picking up a few more people! However, when we get there, its well worth the wait. The hotel we st...
Koh Samed, Thailand andylouThe last time we updated the travelogue was shortly after L's birthday. We have been up to loads of things in Thailand since then. We arrived in Kota Bharu in Northern Malaysia about 7 hours ago. We had been in Thailand for almost a month but had to leave as our visa would have run out tomorrow (16th). We will be back...... Sun 24th Aug - Up at 7.30am and set off on our group trek with Brian as Sharon has been sick all night and can't come. We first trek up to the top of a hill to a Hmong vil...

... to please ask this man (in Thai) where the bus to Nong Kai is. (He just gestured wildly, pointing down the street and shouting at me.)

But good news! I found it! It's not at the bus station at all, as one of the 3 phone calls had stated, although I don't know why. It's about 4 blocks away and leaves several times a day. I intend to take the 8:20 pm bus tonight so that I will get to Maha Sarakham in the late morning on Tuesday ...
Rayong, Rayong, Thailand olsommer... of the Ferrari; "I think I killed the bike".

Luckily for me I was entirely unharmed as was everybody else on the island. The bike though had its back lights smashed and was very much stuck in the thick undergrowth. We managed to get it out and were amazed at the lack of damage. I though myself lucky that neither of the wing mirrors - usually the first thing to get it when things go pear shaped - were intact. I set off to try and find a mechanic after ...
Ban Nong Noen Chan, Rayong, Thailand dantheeducator... but Ko Samed has gone upscale... Instead of a little wooden bungalow with a fan, we are now staying in a villa with air con, TV, safe, and all the amenities + an amazing view. Not quiet as low key, but very charming and I do appreciate the comfort after the last few days... We had our toes in the sand and a cocktail in hands within a few minutes and the political mess of Bangkok seems very, very far away already... ahhhhhhh....
Rayong, Thailand rupertkaufmann... swim in the ocean before and after school if I want. We also have a pool at the hotel. It is VERY hot here though, and no amount of swimming seems to cool me off for more than a few minutes. Monday we started classes. We found out that we are attending class at a temple and practicing teaching on the novice ...
Ban Phe, Thailand michelle.beach... hotel we stayed at before. We then met Danielle at this really nice Italian pizza restaurant. They have the pizza oven in the middle of he restaurant so you can watch them make it. The pizza was really good and cheap. We then came back to Hal and Danielle's and sorted through our stuff. We just took what we needed for the night, instead of hauling around our big bags. Tomorrow we are going to do some serious laundry at their place. - Jesse

There is a separate building of Anoban (kindergarten) complete with its own library. The primary division is split between two buildings and the Mattaum (high school) division has two buildings as well. There is an entire four-story building devoted to technology and information, and each classroom within has over 50 computer stations ...
Rayong, Thailand mikeandjess... in Thailand have taken the obligatory loop through Angkor to Phnom Penh, many as part of $$ package tours from their home countries. This is not off -the-beaten-track travel by any means. (sorry to bore you by following the crowds around!) I have located a retreat cent** in Chiang Mai in north**n Thailand that teaches the same style of meditation I practiced in Burma. My plan is to head up th**e for a month beginning whenev** I return to Thailand ...
Koh Chang, Thailand alanf... quiet place I sought to land in after my retreat! I did manage to find a little paradise the following day however, literally at the end of the road (it does not complete the loop around the island yet). It is inexpensive and clean, and although I heard Bob Marley twice on the first day it was coming from afar and muted. To make up for it they played all of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" that evening. The music and lights do not ...
