Our Dam Blog

Having spent a day on Route 66, today we moved on through the Interstate heading to Las Vegas. A couple of stops on the way, one to a disbanded Silver Mining Town of Calico and then slightly off route to the Hoover Dam. On the way to Las Vegas. We had visited Calico a couple of times when we first got married, but had been a 1 hour stop over for Coffee, this time we were able to spend 4 hours there, arriving when it was fairly quiet and before the tour buses arrived. The only thing we had to ...

Dumb Thieves

Just over 10 years ago we drove into a car park in Vancouver, aware the guy on the gate was very interested we were British we went back to the car about 30 minutes later to find it had been broken into and the door bent off. For whatever reason we went back to the car today. Which was lucky - bare in mind we weren't driving anywhere today. To find someone had kindly separated us from the passenger window and the GPS fitted to the car. I thought I saw something electronic on the ground as I w...

Vegas here we come

A late start 10.00am and a short drive across the desert to Las Vegas. Our hotel is the Sahara at the end of the strip near the Stratosphere. We had a walk around our end of the strip and saw some of the tacky wedding chapels with their hire dresses, plastic flowers and scruffy limos, we saw Circus Circus where Frank and Mary used to take Myra when she was small. It has a circus act preforming every 1/2 hour and is made just for children. We were undecided whether to take the evening tour of ...

A visit to the Hoover Dam and an evening in Vegas

Richard was keen to see the Hoover Dam so we booked up for a half day trip with the Pink Jeep Company. This took us to the top of the dam and then down inside to see the workings. It was a real feat of engineering and I didn't realise that it was built in the Great Depression. Richard was really interested so we were glad we made the trip. We arrived back around 12.00 and spent the rest of the day in Las Vegas, we got a $5 all day bus pass and headed onto the strip. We went into the Venitian ...

Cheesy!

Finally made it to Vegas after an extremely squashy 13 hour flight to L.A. We managed to pick up the hire car okay in L.A., but then proceeded to get lost for about 30/40 minutes and discovered we were heading in teh wrong direction! The freeway in L.A. was HORRIBLE. It was so busy. Seriously, I've never seen so many cars at one time in my life and I was having a panic attack, what with being on the wrong side of the road adn the car and everything!

Anyway, made it to Vegas. I'm not su...

today sees us finally exit the hostel and our ever snoring mate and depart for las vegas. can't wait for a hotel and a bed that doesn't squeak. not that we could really hear that with the ear plugs. the flight was really quick but this kid cried the entire way, and i do mean the entire way. anyway, it's only an hour or so so after a quick nap we were there. got a bus to the hotel really easily and then landed at our hotel where they promptly told us it was too early to check in. by this time ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Sahara Las Vegas Hotel And Casino

Great for Families

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and I always stay at the Sahara when in Vegas. Its one of the best values you'll find on the strip. With so much to do, we like to spend our money on activites and slots not an over priced hotel room. We prefer to stay on the strip and most of them pay under $80 at the Sahara....alot of the time we only paid $29!! The buffet is average but definitely worth the $6.50 - $7.50. Our kids enjoy the arcade and NASCAR settings and LOVE the SPEED roller coaster.

The rooms are clean and most have a good view. The kids watched people do the rides on the Stratosphere for hours from our room window. The coffe shop "Jitters" has wonderful Cappuccino and friendly staff.

If youre looking for the glitz and glamour of a hotel such as Mandolay Bay......you wont find it here, but you will find a nice hotel with a good casino, on the strip without paying a fortune. I would recommend it to anyone!

Great value

from CaroleC
Stayed at the Sahara 7 nights over New Year 2003. Paid extra $10 per night for deluxe room in Tangiers Tower-well worth it. Booked over the net & requested high floor with great views but wasn't really expecting to get it 'cos guessed hotel would be full this time of year. However, we were given a room on the 22nd floor overlooking the Strip-brilliant! Room was clean & spacious with plenty of drawer space (could have done with more clothes hangers in the wardrobe though & coffee maker would have been nice). Staff were friendly and helpful. Buffet o.k. for the money ($6.99 for dinner) but preferred the coffee shop-open 24/7, good food, great value. Although the hotel is at the far end of the Strip didn't find this a problem. We often walked to the centre (20 mins leisurely stroll), when we were feeling lazy jumped onto the CAT bus that stops outside the hotel-it runs up and down the Strip-only $2 per ride. Avoid the trolley bus-takes 30 mins to travel about 100 yards as it goes to the back/side/front entrance of every hotel! Casino at the Sahara was very busy when we were there, had to wait ages some nights to get onto a blackjack table although I guess this was because of the time of year. Most of the dealers were friendly and helpful to us novices (especially Dwayne-very funny guy!). Even found a couple of the pit bosses chatty (although this may have been when they heard our English accent!).

Had a great week at the Sahara, would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends. Really good value for the money we paid.

Great Value, Lots of fun, great payback

I really like the Sahara Hotel and Casino. The buffet is a great value. The Casbar Lounge offers some of the best entertainment that I have heard in Las Vegas. A lot of entertainment that I have bought has not been as good as the Area 51 Experience which plays in the Casbar Lounge. The rooms are real nice with terrific views of the Las Vegas lights. Sunrise and sunset is a spectacular to see view from your room. Highly recomended.

Great Stay at the Sahara

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Sahara 1/2 - 1/3 and it was great. The casino was clean and fun to go to. Stayed in the Tangiers Tower, room 1089. Room was large, as well as the restroom. Beds were comfortable and firm. Housecleaning was up to task. Speed was worth the cost. because it is in the North part of the Strip you can take either the CAT or the Trolley to the rest of the Strip. Have to say that I will definitely stay here again. Great place too stay.

3rd time is not a charm!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have stayed at the Sahara 3 times now, the first in '94 when it still had some of it's "Brat Pack" charm, after the remodel I stayed in one of the new towers in June of 2001. Both of those stay were acceptable, nothing fancy, but a good value, decent room and friendly service for not much money.

Last November, however we stayed 3 nights there and would never go back. Got rooms in the old tower and obviously while they were remodelling the rest of the hotel they forgot about the old tower, because it hasn't been touched since the 50's!! Dingy, holes in the hallway walls, stains on the carpets, obviously not maintained. Our heat/ac controls in our room didn't work so we ended up sleeping with the window open all night, or shoudl I say trying to sleep with all of the nopise coming in. Beford you stay here, check out the Monte Carlo for only a little more you get a much better levelof hotel.

Ate at the buffet, one night....never again!!

Not Bad

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Sahara Memorial Day weekend. All the hotels had raised their prices. The Sahara Hotel was the least expensive on the strip. You see, we wanted to spend most of our money gambling not sleeping. I would not recommend this hotel if you are not mobile. It is far away from some of the action. Otherwise, not bad at all. The roller coaster is fun to watch or ride if you wish.

Good eats, cheap

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Sahara Hotel and Casino coffee shop is worth a visit. They have good food, cheap. The wait staff is one of the friendliest in Las Vegas.

Less than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just returned from a Las Vegas vacation. Stayed at the Sahara Hotel and wished that I had picked another hotel.

These were the problems:

(1) Non-smoking room was not available. After taking the smoking room I found smoke coming in from vent.

(2) After moved to a nonsmoking room we still received cigarette smoke from the the vent.

(3) Room was hot! There is no control of the air conditioning into each room.

(3) Opened window, but the noise from the casino roof top air conditioners were extremely loud.

Next time I will spend a little more money and get a better hotel.

Great stay at the Sahara

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Sahara for three nights in July 2002, and it was great. The room was low in price, spacious, and clean. Although it was quite a walk (or a quick cab ride) to the main part of the strip, we had a great view of it from our room. The casino was smaller than most, which was great because it wasn't as crowded as the rest.(It still had all the same tablegames as other casinos however.) What made this casino better than the rest to me however, was the one dollar min. tablegames that they had. I would definatly stay at the Sahara again!

Just got back from a week stay at the Sahara. Staff was friendly, slots looser than most and although not within walking distance of other entertainment, everything we wanted to do was a short cab ride away. Rooms and food were basic but certainly inexpensive. The room prices were really low. Will definitly do it again. I had the greatest time!
