It is promoted as a “ghost town” because it was finally deserted in the 1920-30’s after Turkey and Greece did a citizen swap where Greek-speaking Christians were moved out of muslim Turkey & vice versa. Most of the Greeks moved to mainland Greece, Kastelorizo or Australia, hence the town is now deserted. It was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1950’s which was the death knell. Nowadays the “modern town” ...

    ... we felt it sensible to "park off". Sticking to the back roads and keeping as close to the lake as possible in hope of finding something led us to Dalyan. Dalyan is famed for its tourist attractions most of which are reached by boat taxis.


    The turtles at the river mouth, the mudbaths and the Kaunos archaeological site being some of the more popular stop overs if one takes a day tour.

    No campsites were obvious ...

    ... there is a selection of “slow cooked” dishes which have to be ordered 3 hours beforehand. She quite happily let Paul bring a menu back to the hotel so we could have a look. Needless to say we’ve been there more than once – tonight for the slow cooked options. These are local dishes which have to be ordered at least 3 hours in advance.

    We walked down to the restaurant and were intrigued by the containers of water at every bend. Water - to bus used in the event of a fire!

    Our walk took us along the sea front at dusk - so picturesque but a huge new hotel may have an impact. Unfortunately the road is too narrow to safely walk back, at night. This meant we said no to the deserts!

    ... Is definitely the best table in the house. Even though I'd tipped Aydin almost as soon as we sat down, he still gave us his best attention and service throughout our (very extended) meal, so well done to him.
    To finish off this perfect last day we thought we'd take a little detour and drop into the Harmony Bar at the waters edge for a couple of drinks as the sunset turned to darkness above us... as I've said before, it doesn't get too much better than this...!!! ...
