We arrived in Nairobi Kenyatta airport this morning, hoping to board our flight to Bamako at 8.55 am, and were in a good mood and looking forward to our next leg in our travels. Things soon changed, when we couldn't see our flight listed on the screen, but we're now used to things not being where they should be in Africa, and weren't especially worried queuing for our boarding passes. However, the screen was right, our flight to Bamako didn't exist!! The attendant asked why we didn't confirm ...

Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya safarikingSo last night I had hard time falling asleep. I ended up getting a few hours though, and when I woke up at 7, I was pretty ready to go. Breakfast was pretty decent - did I mention that I'm staying at the Nairobi Safari Club? Breakfast was included in my stay, which was nice - pretty traditional, with eggs, fried plantains, and mushrooms. Mmmm. I then made my way to the conference. Things didn't seem like they were going too well, since the guy that I'd been dealing with at Africa Peace Forum ...
Nairobi, Kenya jessica_cdnWell, I've finally arrived. It was certainly an eventful trip! After updating the blog, I made my way to the gate where my flight was boarding. It wasn't just the usual pre-boarding - it had its own pre-boarding lounge, where you went through security AGAIN. I went through the most intense security screening I've been through yet (save for the thing that blew air on me in the US...). I had a total pat-down when I beeped - alarmingly thorough. Anyway... My flight was late leaving Amsterdamn - ...
Nairobi, Kenya jessica_cdnI have written these travelpods whenever I can, wherever I can, desperately trying to get it all down and documented before the vividness of these incredible experiences leaves my head. As a result I have left some of you confused, and some of you not even knowing where the heck I am. So, I'm just going to put a very quick, point form summary of the timeline of my trip. Nov. 1st - Leave for Kenya Nov. 3rd @ 8am - Arrive in Kenya Nov. 3rd @ noon - Begin AYICC Youth Conference (COY2) Nov. 3rd-N...
Nairobi, Kenya maiaSo, I did actually manage to see a bit of Kenya other than the UN compound, and Kibera. First, I should mention briefly that the first weekend of COP I went to a giraffe centre and to a cultural centre where we saw traditional villages, dancing and music. I got to kiss a giraffe and feed them from this wooden structure. They were roaming around in the trees and were really quite majestic and beautiful. That day was spent with my friend Jack, two other people from the Canadian Youth Delegation...

... and fold-down seats that could fill the aisle. We packed in with our carry-on baggage on our knees and were driven the short distance to the plane. We could have walked more quickly and with less fuss, but that wasn't an option. The flight left very close to on-time and I slept almost immediately, waking as the sun began showing over the Rift Valley just west of Nairobi. Now I'm in an airport lounge, partway through my six-hour layover before the flight to
Nairobi, Kenya joelmeeker... tipped over but all was ok and we were back on our way. We got back to Nairobi in the early afternoon. Our entire group opted to stay together at a hostel called endaba in a suburb of Nairobi. Its a quiet little place with a pool table, large tv, internet, and dart board. We helped our tour leader clean the truck and then relaxed for awhile. That night we all got invited to eat dinner with Tom and his family. Michelle told us that in his 10 years ...
Nairobi, Kenya gajordandk51One short note about Nairobi (or at least the area the Compound is in). Blackouts are frequent. (and by frequent, I mean nearly daily, and sometimes even multiple times per day) Sometimes they last only 10 minutes. Other times it can be an hour or two or more. Of course, you never know when it's going to happen, or for how long. It can get quite irritating if you're actually trying to get anything done (like writing blog entries).
Nairobi, Kenya dsheffermanAlways the ones to ensure an adventure, Jay and Shannon arranged for us to all head out in the morning for ostrich rides. It was a blast! Caravanning in 3 cars, we drove to an ostrich farm about an hour from the house. The roads here are terrible. They are laden with potholes and as mentioned earlier, rules of the road are nonexistent. Making it even more interesting, the last 8 kilometers ...
Nairobi, Kenya dshefferman... express and luxury we can find. But th**e are disadvantages...AKA costs: Things are v**y expensive. Tanzania has gone straight in with a BANG! as the country at the top of our expenditure charts (see Annex A for a full statto breakdown). (Professional statto explanation to follow:) Whilst our av**age daily expenditure in Tanzania is inflated by us moving quite quickly ov** a short p**iod of time and num**ous visa expenses, we have not really 'done ...
