Well, I've finally arrived. It was certainly an eventful trip! After updating the blog, I made my way to the gate where my flight was boarding. It wasn't just the usual pre-boarding - it had its own pre-boarding lounge, where you went through security AGAIN. I went through the most intense security screening I've been through yet (save for the thing that blew air on me in the US...). I had a total pat-down when I beeped - alarmingly thorough. Anyway... My flight was late leaving Amsterdamn - ...
Nairobi, Kenya jessica_cdnSo last night I had hard time falling asleep. I ended up getting a few hours though, and when I woke up at 7, I was pretty ready to go. Breakfast was pretty decent - did I mention that I'm staying at the Nairobi Safari Club? Breakfast was included in my stay, which was nice - pretty traditional, with eggs, fried plantains, and mushrooms. Mmmm. I then made my way to the conference. Things didn't seem like they were going too well, since the guy that I'd been dealing with at Africa Peace Forum ...
Nairobi, Kenya jessica_cdnSo, I did actually manage to see a bit of Kenya other than the UN compound, and Kibera. First, I should mention briefly that the first weekend of COP I went to a giraffe centre and to a cultural centre where we saw traditional villages, dancing and music. I got to kiss a giraffe and feed them from this wooden structure. They were roaming around in the trees and were really quite majestic and beautiful. That day was spent with my friend Jack, two other people from the Canadian Youth Delegation...
Nairobi, Kenya maiaI have written these travelpods whenever I can, wherever I can, desperately trying to get it all down and documented before the vividness of these incredible experiences leaves my head. As a result I have left some of you confused, and some of you not even knowing where the heck I am. So, I'm just going to put a very quick, point form summary of the timeline of my trip. Nov. 1st - Leave for Kenya Nov. 3rd @ 8am - Arrive in Kenya Nov. 3rd @ noon - Begin AYICC Youth Conference (COY2) Nov. 3rd-N...
Nairobi, Kenya maiaWe arrived in Nairobi Kenyatta airport this morning, hoping to board our flight to Bamako at 8.55 am, and were in a good mood and looking forward to our next leg in our travels. Things soon changed, when we couldn't see our flight listed on the screen, but we're now used to things not being where they should be in Africa, and weren't especially worried queuing for our boarding passes. However, the screen was right, our flight to Bamako didn't exist!! The attendant asked why we didn't confirm ...

... The best part is- everyone actually liked it! I also made No-Bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, which are one of my favorites. Ruth, our host mother, is a great cook, so I was a little nervous to make dinner, but it turned out well. I will have to get some of her recipes before I head home; especially how to make chapati- a delicious flatbread that we have with lentils. Yum!
Nairobi, Kenya robynkelley... full of food and soda. Luckily, they agreed to let Jackie and I share a Tangawizi (Ginger soda) and a piece of cake. The video finished, but our host restarted it so we could watch from the beginning. After the show and refreshments were finished we walked outside to check out the livestock. Zero-graze is a way for people to utilize animals, especially milking cows, in areas where land is scarce. All feed is brought to the cows who remain in their stalls. Although ...
Nairobi, Nairobi Area, Kenya gingerschilling... Grace, was so excited to see her. She ran to her and threw her arms around her, and did the same for me and Robyn. We played Simon says, a dancing game where you make a huge circle and someone goes to the middle and dances, and then calls someone else into the middle to dance and so on. The dance moves were incredible! The camera was a huge hit, they love having their picture taken and think it’s the ...
Nairobi, Kenya orielleThis is going to be a long entry! Well, we arrived safely on Saturday night! Joseph met us at the airport-the only thing missing was Robyn's bag. After two hours of searching, standing in line and finally giving up, we headed home. To be honest, I was so exhausted I didn’t remember much. All I know is that it was the longest plane ride of my life. Ruth had dinner waiting for us when we arrived, a tasty dish of seasoned rice, cabbage and tomato sauce ...
Nairobi, Kenya orielle... even with the social pressures to stop this tradition. Boys and girls become men and women during this ceremony at age 13. To show bravery, the boys are encouraged not to cry or make any noises during the procedure. We then went to tables where the women had their handicrafts and jewelry displayed for purchase. Clint and I bought a beautifully beaded and decorated stick made of olive wood used by tribe chiefs during important meetings. We also shared ...
