... br> We went to the 'Sakura' restaurant for a 4-course traditional Japanese evening meal, however I don't know what counts as a course as they kept bringing out new plates of new and interesting food. We were able to grind our own wasabi, had a range of condiments including soft blue cheese, and ended up very full. If this is traditional Japanese food I don't get why they are generally so lean.

... One of the highlights was that it contained an inner chamber which we had to walk down to via a narrow staircase, which lead to a completely pitch black corridor. You had to use your right hand to feel along the wall and find your way. Near the end you touch a metal key hanging on the wall to give you enlightment. When we left we definitely felt something although we weren't sure what it was!

... the whole block will go up so must check it on the way back past tomorrow. We took a taxi from the train station to the ryokan where we are staying. Normally they offer a pick up service but we were quite early. When we arrived the host offered to drive us straight up to the monkey park so we took him up on his offer. A lack of the ubiquitous concrete, that seems to define urban japan, and, instead, many more traditional houses along with fruit and wine plantations make Obuse a pleasant irregularity. It used to be rich and important in the 19th century but now is a haven for day-tripping pensioners and families.
