Tuscan bread and the Feria Cavalli

This was our planned Tuscany day, and we decided instead of coming back to Firenze at night, we would just head north toward Bergamo and stop along the way. We took the bus to the car rental office, signed the paperwork and when we asked for directions to get back to our B&B the agent informed us that one could not drive in the central city without a permit. So we took the bus back to the B&B, Mom went to find a taxi while I lugged all the suitcases downstairs. The taxi arrived, took ...

The week of flip flopping decision making

... of the station I saw a Blockbuster tucked against the beautiful Italian hill and wanted a picture of it, because it was so out of place, and there was a sex shop attached to it. But as I slowed to take out my camera I saw the guy again and noticed for the first time that I was in a pretty sketchy part of town. I immediately turned around to go back to the castle and had to pass the guy who had been following me. I kept my head down and ...

... toilet. We took the obligatory photos at the Rialto then just planned to walk towards a different section of the Grand Canal, but ended up just wandering through the back streets soaking up the atmosphere. There were tourists everywhere we went and of course shops selling Murano Glass and other souvenirs- I don’t know how they all survive. We ended up losing our way constantly until we got the Grand Canal opposite the ...

... summer. Katelyn thought that there must have been a concert the night before as there were cigarette butts everywhere and some rubbish behind seats, but we had to remind her that we weren’t in Switzerland anymore. It would have been great to see a concert there.

We moved on to the Castelvecchio which is a castle or home to a couple of the noble families of Verona but is now a very important art gallery with religious paintings which always had some form of ...

Ciao Italy

... wouldn’t see on a Saturday night in Sydney. There were market stalls in one of the piazzas and I found someone selling chestnuts so I was happy- I hadn’t seen any in Innsbruck and they didn’t seem to be too common in Verona. As we were looking for somewhere to eat, we noticed that all of the restaurants had similar menus, and go figure, it was all Italian food. We hardly saw restaurants for any other type of food.

Disaster strikes

... for a place up the road, which turned out to be a film developing shop. The owner had a look, and shaking his head said that no one would be able to help me then in Milano. I was crushed - not only was the camera borrowed, but I could potentially be camera-less for most of the remainder of my trip. I decided on a temporary action plan; buy a new camera body to use while I got the other one fixed and then sell the new one and return the repaired camera to its ...

Verona :where confused lovers abound (or tourists?

... were talking 16, 18 here) monsters. Not to worry, Ill just take care of it at the hostel which is a half hr bus ride from il centro. And then a walk up a dimly lit road. For like 6 blocks. (they also have a camping ground (it clearly being out in the sticks and all), so the walk is surrounded by trees... im sure pretty by day but creepy by night.) And since Aislinn spent her time in Verona ignoring signs, she figured itd be prudent to follow ...

... road north to Austria. roadtrippin to Austria The austostrada was carpeted in so much snow that even the Italians were slowing down!!! Just south of Bologna, the road had copped 40 cms of snow overnight, but we didn't have to put on the chains as the road was beign cleared and salted regularly. Once we crossed the Austrian border, the weather cleared (other side of a big moutain pass) and we scored magnificant views of the Tyrolean Alps as their engulf Innsbruck.
