Antalya

We made a quick overnight stop in Antalya in order to make a bus connection. The city has over 700,000 people and is probably one of the more liberal cities in Turkey. Spaghetti-strap tops seemed to replace the head scarf here. As we travel about to different areas of the country we are visually reminded at how varied the culture of Turkey is. If you tried to stereotype the Turk, I suppose you'd be making the same mistake as anywhere else in the world - it isn't easily done. It was just a qui...

Attention! Attention!

Just an announcement regarding the overnight bus ride from Goreme to Antalya. Dana was able to sleep on the bus! Possibly the first time EVER!

Burning, Scorching, Steaming, Hot

We arrived in Antalya at about 6:30am. The bus ride was sensatýonal - as you may have guessed from the 'Attention! Attention!' entry. Both Trevor and I managed to sleep for nearly the full 8 hours. At the front of these buses, there is a clock and temperature gage that is really quite handy. As we were rubbing our eyes and waking up, we glanced at the clock: '6:30am'. We glanced at the temperature: '30 degrees celsius'. Youch. We had been told that a shuttle bus would pick us up from the Otog...

Things We Learned in Olympos

The 5 things we learned in Olympos: 1) Dana Cannot Turkish belly-dance (not that she, for one minute, pretended that she could). 2) Smoking Promotions are common occurrances in the bars. On our big night out to ORANGE BAR, we saw a young group of about 20 good-looking guys and girls walk in, all wearing these pristine white uniforms. The girls in mini-dresses, head bandanas and sparkling, shiny, silver platform shoes - the guys in matching white pants and tops. It was like a 'Gilligan's Islan...

Good Friends, Good Beer, Good Beach

What did you do today? We swam in the Mediterranean and basked in the sun on a beautiful beach surrounded by huge mountains covered sporadically in lush green vegetation with various rocky ruins from the 2nd century BC gazing down on us. I was completely breathtaking. We left the scorching city of Antalya in favor of the rocky beach and tree huts of Olympos. Olympos is just inland from a beautiful beach. It is here that we met some new friends from Istanbul and had a couple of late nights. Wh...

Strange these security people!

... chance. This time the security guard took them away to show someone else. Really what do they find so fascinating.

We sat back for the two and a half hour crossing to mainland Turkey (95TL each, but if you don't buy them at the terminal you should be able to get them for 65TL). We arrived in Tasucu unfortunately early as our bus to Fehtiye was not leaving until 8.30 that evening (bus to Fehtiye 45 TL each).

Whether we were allowed or not we have made it to Turkey.

Bus-lagged and Dangerous

... area seems not so bad, especially the smallest of the lot, Tasucu. Lonely Planet says no reason to hang here, but I beg to differ. For the first time I actually feel myself connecting with Turkey and its people, not just processed. Tasucu is a nice little beach town with very few tourists, and I like it that way. I sense some sincere hospitality, not just opportunistic commercialism. In one instance after I ...

The last of the Bedouin?

... with the challenges they are facing. I still believe that education is the key to facilitiate and increase the number of choices they can have for a sustainable future. Having worked for many years in nomadic education programmes in Africa it was quit and eye opener to see how the Bedouin of the Middle East are continuing to cope with the challenges of the 21st century without losing their great traditional value of hospitality!

... hand dug through the soft stone) you could see huge stones that they would roll across passages to seal it off incase someone unwanted came in. It was all very interesting and quite fun exploring all the hidden passageways. It was a big drive to the coast, and it was extremely muggy when we arrived. The camp site though is in one of the most picturesque places. Our van is parked right on the beach, which is ...

Spring Break... Camping on the Mediterranean

... the various cactus, trees and brush erupting in a rainbow of colors, and the trees that pierce the deep blue sky draped with oranges, bananas, figs, avocados, apricots to name a few... the fish, crabs and various sea creatures that dart, crawl and grasp to their aquatic world... Quite often on trips it is the people that leave a lasting impression... this journey was no different... One early ...

Syria ... Border crossing into the "Axis of Evil"

... Syrians have relatively no procedures for their citizens to cross back and forth other than showing their passports or ID cards. The form is all in Arabic, no English and Danielle's written Arabic is a bit rusty and mine is nonexistent. We are struggling through the form, get about 25% completed and then the guy behind the counter impatiently says that we have filled in enough and hand it in. Fine with me, but it seems that we have barely written anything of consequence on the form ...
