We left Hong Kong on Wednesday evening and after a 8 hour flight to Sydney, we changed planes for the 3 hour hop down to Christchurch, where we now are. We caught up with D & B when they whizzed through immigration, while we waited in line, with several hundred other non Ozzies/Kiwis, to be grilled as to why we had come, when we were going home, where we were going to stay and even what car we were driving! When they asked the young guy in front of us, why he had such red eyes, suggestin...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand nickadamsWe all caught up on our sleep last night so decided that we would have breakfast out and take a look round the centre of Christchurch, near to where we are staying. This is a very English feeling area, with the River Avon, on which you can hire a punt, flowing by on the other side of the road from our apartment, and Oxford Terrace on one side and Cambridge Terrace on the other. Unknown to us before we arrived, a bit like Chinese New year in HK, (what planning?), there is a week long Busking F...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand nickadamsOur second full day in Christchurch began with Dave heroically demolishing the 'Bigger than Ben Hur' breakfast at the local cafe, while the rest of us were slightly more circumspect. Unfortunately we all had to pay for this later in the day when nature took its inevitable course, but hopefully the Christchurch sewage system will recover! We took the round the City Tram Tour after breakfast and got off again almost immediately when the girls spotted another market! Dave and Barb bought some re...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand nickadamsIt was still raining when we left the Chapel apartments around 10.30 this morning and had breakfast at a small café in the Octagon in the centre of Dunedin. We were then heading north to Christchurch, around 360kms and 5+ hours, but as we were already booked into the same apartment in Christchurch as we stayed in for our first three nights, we were in no hurry. I drove for the first third of the journey, as the rain got heavier and more persistent and Dave acted as DJ. When we reached Omeru,...

... br> We spent our first night in the South Island in a town called Nelson. All week the kiwis had been advertising a big boxing match between an older NZ boxer at the end of his career and a younger NZ fighter showing promise so we decided to sit in a bar and soak up the atmosphere. 3 hours later and having sat through some rubbish fights it was time for the big match to ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand smigglesmith... places that you could enjoy no matter what the weather. Seriously, the campervan was heaps of fun and we thoroughly enjoyed the evenings with the vans circled up so we could enjoy pleasant "cocktail parties", which is a signature of the way we travel with friends. I wasn't all that taken with the bedding bit. I do suffer from tight spaces anxiety a little and I'm not a small person, so sleeping over a week in a camper was pushing the friendship. If I did it again, I'd probably spend ...
Highways of New Zealand's South Island, South Island, New Zealand harleynut... 24 knots and we were told that if it got any windier at all we wouldn't be going (25 is the limit). Only one plane got up after our's and then they cancelled all jumps for the rest of the day. We had to share a mini bus back to town with some very fed up people, whilst trying not to look too smug ourselves... We would highly recommend doing a sky jump to anyone, it is totally awesome! If money was no object, we would have done another! In the late afternoon we ...
christchurch, New Zealand mel07pink... Tracy was in one of my teams at SQA and emigrated to NZ in January) Elaine and Marion - maybe you could pass this on to Lynda and Janet at SLC. We're about to head off to Omerau in North Otago where Mary's cousin lives - we'll have a couple of days there and then do some more sightseeing in Central and South Otago. Hope everyone is well and that spring is starting to show itself. Leaves are falling off the trees here so officially Autumn has begun. Lots of love from us here T an'M
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand tanmsblog... Back at our chosen spot for freedom camping (Takaka ISite carpark) we were cooking our usual meal when the hippy from the ferry rolled up in his house truck ... it turns out he has a house (without wheels) not far from Takaka. Both feeling a bit like we needed to spend some time outside the campervan we decided to get some beers from the supermarket as the cheaper option and then go to a local DJ set at 10pm after having a shower at a 1920's hotel. Surprising ...
