How a cat would not let Göreme sleep....

... bed. The first night Samsung found out about Manu's evil plans and threw the cat out of the room. The last night we spent in Göreme Manuel camouflaged the kitten with his hand. He was not able to camouflage the cat's purring though, so he pretended to have some digesting problems.
However the night was quite fine until the cat became active and Manuel was happy because he could watch Jonas and Helmut throwing the cat from their bed over to ...

GOREME - TURKEY
After 3 nights in Istanbul we were ready to move on - even though you could stay there for over a week and still not see everything. We weren't sure where to go - it was either to Southern Turkey to the Mediterranean or straight to Sofia, Bulgaria or our final choice, Goreme in the middle of Turkey. We definitely made the right decision. When we first saw pictures of Turkey we were immediately attracted to the region of Cappadocia. They have some of the ...

The Balloon That Never Flew

... was just beginning, and we had no idea what we were in store for. We took a 12 hour overnight bus to Istanbul. Despite the promised free transfer, we ended up having to take the subway to the airport. We arrived early, and found a Gloria Jeans there. We decided to have a big splurge before changing the remainder of our money, and we each ordered an extra large blended coffee drink.

When we checked into our flight, which was supposed to take off at 1 pm, we were ...

... once a forest also... But NIMBY syndrome is probably as human as anything (NIMBY being Not In My Back Yard). Oh well, still interesting to listen to the conversation and especially to hear the very type of debate we had over and over again in Nepal with respect to a different tourist location.

Kristen and I were both excited for the night ahead at dinner that night. That, of course, did not keep us from thoroughly enjoying our Pides, which were definitely the best ...

Landing on the moon

... had to scramble over boulders. The gorge itself was very beautiful with high sided walls that had been carved into by ancient locals for dwellings and pigeon houses. Before having lunch we visited an old church and a building where linseed oil used to be made up which overlooked the gorge. Our last sightseeing stop for the day was at the Selime Monastary which turned out to be unexpectedly spectacular as it was set into a giant rockface. The locals had carved into the ...

... there was some sun! I went to the Love Valley. I had a good laugh when I realized how it got its name! The tuff cones there are shaped like phalluses! Then you get to the white valley also beautiful and on to the city of Uchisar which is really charming and where you can find nice expensive pensions, hotels and restaurants. There is a castle and the tuff cones behind are tall, big and beautiful. A lot of them have been turned into nice hotels with ...

Exploring the south

... wasn't great. Next day we took off for Fethiye. We went to Saklýkent on the way - a hidden valley. We walked along a narrow bridge and went to the water. There were fantastic restaurants. Next stop Fethiye- we got there about 1pm. Found our apartment- Esmeralda has connections there thru work- no rooms in the hotel so we had our own 2 bedroom apartment for the night. Relaxed by the pool before heading off to Ölu Deniz- known as the Dead Sea and ...

... with the professional belly dancer. At the tail end of the night we were a little drunk but with some great memories. Awaking slowly the next morning, we headed out to see the Gorome open air museum (a tourist trap to see some Church's in the hills). Donna and I both decided to leave the tourist scene and try walking two local valleys (Red and Love valleys) to find some adventure. Hopefully the photo's tell you a story of some of the fun we got up to on our trip.

Cave life

... by one. In any case, no corridor is much wider than one man so, in effect, the strength of the army was reduced to a single soldier at a time.

Walking around in this vast network (five kilometres of 'streets') we found ourselves almost alone. We explored rooms that were used as wine-making centres, grain stores, animal stables, family rooms and communal kitchens. Tiny corridors led down here and there, odd holes allowed you to see into other levels and disjointed voices ...
