The next day, after a late breakfast, a few of us rustled up the enthusiasm to pay a visit to nearby Strbske Pleso, a glacial lake offering stunning views and photo opportunities. Another visit to Pizzeria Montanara in the evening was followed by a few drinks back at the hotel (in my case, another bottle of Um).

... torrent below. I couldn't believe that this had been marked as a road bridge on the map. It was only any good for pedestrians (or really enthusiastic cycle tourers). I pushed my bike across and when we neared the other end he started to point out how to get to the road on the other side. The "bridge" was obviously part of an old gravel mine however now it was surrounded by fields with a few cows wandering around grazing. He pointed at a church spire a kilometre or so away ...

... the attraction of Slovensky Raj was the challenge of the hiking, rather than the beauty of the gorges. I encountered a lot more clambering and climbing on the trails I took than dramatic vistas and other scenery. It was enjoyable, but more like the joy that comes from completing an obstacle course than the joy of admiring a beautiful object.
