As we didn't have a lot of bags, we walked for 20 min to get to our comfy ryokan. We couldn't check in for a few hours, so we left our bag and headed out to explore. The weather was clear and crisp -- perfect for hiking up the hills and staircases on the way to the major sites and temples.

First we saw the famous red lacquered wooden Shinkyo Bridge . This site would have been a real looker a few weeks earlier ...

... until I get to the waterfall, lots of bods. Wonder back up the road to the bus stop the buses are regular and punctual so it made getting around very easy. On the bus ask about the next waterfall people are so helpful they stopped all getting on the bus so I could get off. This waterfall was much larger with shops and small temples on the side of the river. And yes steps that follow the waterfall up and up and up and up. But wonderful It's getting late will I get to the last ...

caught the early train 10am up to the Nikko area. went to KInugawa first to do a fairly tourist thing where I went down the rapids in a traditional Japanese boat. I was the only westy on the boat and the whole tour was done in Japanese so I did not get any of the history and or jokes that were being told on the 30 minute trip down the river. I still had no where t stay the night and it was looking ...

... we had the path completely to ourselves. This time we did pass a couple of old Japanese people walking their dogs but that was it. By the time we reached the end of the path we had walked about 10km, climbed about 1500 steps up and down and were Stuffed (note the capital S). We caught the bus back to the guesthouse along with some very cheeky (not in a good way) high school children. I'm about to turn in for the night, ready for our trip to Yamanouchi tomorrow to see the snow ...
