Hobart to Auckland via Sydney

So after a magical time in Tasmania and a feeling that I got to know the place and its wines well I had to hit the train for New Zealand. First hick-up of the trip with issues on my baggage weight both for the hand luggage and hold luggage. After some repacking, I managed to get things sorted but had to pay $100 excess – hey ho, I think I may need to post some books and things back from New Zealand.

Sydney International Terminal – what a joke. This has to be the worst thoug...

Cool view across to the bridge from my 11th floor room – clearly in a big city now. There is a team building a building just below me but not too noisy – glad that they are still a couple of floors below my room!

Walked down to the harbour area where there is the local tourist info place (known as i-sites in NZ). Tried to take a guided walk but apparently these only go if there are enough folks who have booked ahead and I hadn't. Walked around to the Harbour info kiosk whe...

Hello Auckland

This morning we packed up again and headed out onto the road for our trip into Auckland. We had a stop along the way at Hamilition for breakfast at the golden arches restaurant. Then headed into Auckland. We arrived at Nikki's friends Gail place just after lunch and had a quick cuppa. This is where we separated. Nikki was staying with Gail and her family for the night and Haydn, Celise and Myself were heading into Auckland city to stay at Rydges for the night. We arrived at Rydges and checked...

Photos - HERE or cut and paste: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesaharr ison/ Last entry for New Zealand :( Hello again everyone, I hope you're all good!?! I'm very sad to write that this is my last entry for New Zealand. I have absolutely loved every minute of my time here and I definitely hope to return one day. There have been so many highlights, so many great experiences and so many amazing memories. I think I ended my last blog with news of my upcoming skydive so this is where I'll start...

St Patrick's Day in Auckland

Packed up and left the bach mid-morning for the long drive back to Auckland - went a different way this time so we could see another part of the area, and ended up in Withianga for a walk round the marina, a wee play in the playpark for Evelyn and some lunch. Evelyn and I played truth or dare (which is harder than you might think in the back of a car with an eight-year old!) and drew pictures to pass the time, but it was still quite a tiring journey (so hats off to John for driving us what fe...

Pavlova, finally

I did a little last minute souvenir shopping in Palm Cove and then we were off to the airport.  The flight was forgettable, which is a good thing.   However, we were pretty hungry by the time we landed.  We asked the driver if there were any places to eat that were still open.  His response was "only the American fast food restaurants."  He then proceeded to show us the Burger King, McDonalds, Denny's etc.  Meanwhile, we were passing sushi places, Chinese food, and other local restaurants, bu...

Made it to Auckland

Arrived in Auckland late and took the bus to the hotel. The bus wasn't bad. Lots of backpackers and other travellers en route to the next part of the journeys as well. Stayed at the Rydges, a block away from Sky Tower. Nice place, close to everything.

Historical Traveler Reviews of Rydges Hotel Auckland

Okay for a night

from A TripAdvisor Member
Staff do need some training in customer service. I would rate this as basic but central. My husband was offered "services" by a lady outside the hotel, staff seemed aware off her presence but done nothing to remove her and she continued bothering other gentlemen. Very much a business hotel and, yes, she most likely did do business there!

Horrible bathroom

from A TripAdvisor Member
We found the bedroom ok, the staff was quite friendly, but we did hate the bathroom. It was quite large, but had one of these walk-in showers, so when you have a shower, the whole floor gets flooded. Plus there was absolutely nowhere to put our stuff. No shelves or anything like that. Nowhere to put a brush or a cosmetic bag.

Would not return to this hotel

I just returned from New Zealand and stayed in the Rydges Auckland first for one night and then again for 2 nights. The people were less than helpful or friendly. The location was great. The rooms were OK nothing special. I stayed my last night in Auckland at another hotel that was wonderful, helpful and friendly and much more comfortable.

Okay Hotel- Poor Customer Service

from Steph1986
I stayed here for 3 nights and it was an average expreience. The room is good. Whilst the bedding seemed to be a bit tatty and the housekeeping was average to say the least (the bed was not made very nicely- the sheets were still very crinkled, and one night I came back to find one of the facewashers I used simply hung over the shower rod and not replaced), the rest of the room was very spacious, and had a great view of the skytower.

I could put up with all of this, though the customer service was appaling. The girl at reception (with name begining with 'H'- avoid her if you can) was very abrupt, and did not manage to crack a smile upon check-in. This was ok, I thought, after working in customer service, I understand that we all have bad days, but she served me again upon check-out, she was just as rude, if not she seemed ruder! I asked to have my luggage stored for a few hours and she simply thrust a couple of pieces of paper at me and said 'Put this on it', and went to serve the next customer.

This place is ok if you are simply looking for a bed for a night.

Good hotel!

We stayed with two small children in the Rydges and we loved it. A good location, very friendly staff, very clean room and good breakfast and dining. We had a nice room with a beautiful view. It was a very pleasant stay!

Great location. Good hotel.

Stayed at Rydges for 3 nights in April. Superb location and an excellent base from which to explore the city but if you want to spend a lot of time staying in the hotel soaking up the ambiance......this isint for you.

Staff were friendly. Room was clean spacious, modern and well maintained. The real winner for me was the restaurant. Wonderful friendly staff, superb food and a comprehensive wine list meant that we took quite a while to eat dinner in the evenings. The Rydges is all that it says it is......no more...no less. I would stay here again.

This is nothing special

from kiwiuk
We stayed one night and found the location to be reasonably central (very convenient for the Sky Tower), but the hotel is a little bland. Most rooms had no worthwhile views and ours was rather compact, with 2 double beds, desk, mini-bar / fridge, television and 2 chairs.

We didn't use the restaurant, preferring to eat out.

The service was very good and we were given an extended check out on request. The staff were helpful & friendly.

I suspect there are better hotels to stay at, but this is adequate if not special.

Great for work not so good for romance

from A TripAdvisor Member
My boyfriend and I stayed in the Rydges for one night and I was disappointed with the hotel.

Let me start by giving you their two redeeming features - clean and has a great location.

Auckland is a small city already but the Rydges is located one tiny block from the Sky City and seconds away from the city centre.

If you need to spend one night in Auckland for business, this hotel is perfect. Whilst we were there it already gets a lot of business from professionals seeking a night accommodation. You get what you pay for - a clean room, a restaurant and it is only moments away from CBD.

What I found troublesome is that the Rydges has no heart. I believe that there are other hotels which will give you better value for money, decor and service.

On holiday, and bearing in mind, the Rydges promotes itself as a 4 star hotel, I am expecting some type of porter service. You don't get this at the Rydges, you are expected to take carry your own luggage, with no offered assistance.

The rooms are basic - clean but very basic. The rooms have no warmth. Put it this way, whilst some hotels, want you to feel that their hotel is a home away from home, this hotel certainly wants to remind you, that you have your own house!

Great Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed last weekend at Rydges to go to a show in Auckland, being two blocks back from Queen Street, there was no traffic noise. Good sized room, we had a queen and double bed in ours with views of the harbour, the other side has views of the Sky Tower. The service was excellent and the staff all very hlepful and friendly, you cant go past Rydges for a great place to stay in Central Auckland
